Indents change when restart numbering on bullets (Word 2007)

How do I get Word to stop changing the indents on my bulleted lists when I
restart the numbering? So far, the only way I know to fix this is to manually
move the indent back, because when I re-apply the style, the indent jumps to
the left. I've had this problem in Word 2003 as well.

Have you defined the indent as part of the numbering rather than part of the
paragraph formatting?

I don't see where I can adjust the indent in the Bullets/numbering menu. I
have it defined in the Paragraph menu, but when I set the bullet/number, Word
either changes my settings in that menu, or it changes the indent, even if it
doesn't indicate a change in my Paragraph menu settings.

Susan, I'm having the same result, same complaint. I've used MS Word since... OK, about 20 years, and I am definitely a 90% power user. The answers just don't do it, they don't point to something I can do that works. There is a second part of this: If I turn my back on the doc (close it, come back later) the indents have their own mind. I can see where the tabs are, they are correct, but not the indents. If I apply the style, then the particular list item I numbered does shape up but not the others. I must provide a context: I don't just finish documents. I work with documents - "templates/models" or not - that engineers will use. I have observed that these indents go flakey for them too. I have been to the link you last referenced, and it was well written; I had high hopes. But still doesn't match the setup options available.
