Incredibly Slow File Associations & Shortcuts

Windows Explorer was my GUI of choice for Win98SE. I found it very
convenient to just click on a file and have it open in the appropriate
application. Even on my old PIII 750 Word documents and Excel files would
open immediately. I just built a P4 2.8 w/1 GB RAM & it takes for ever to
open a file! (i.e. 15-20 seconds.) What's really weird is that if I start
the application first and open the file through the application, the file
loads immediately. The lengthy delay occurs when I double click on a file
icon in Explorer or My Computer or a desktop shortcut to a file.
Also if I right click on any of these types of icons there is a similar 15
second delay before the drop down menu appears. Shortcuts to applications
get immediate results and there is no right click delay. Any suggestions
would be most welcome!

Run Defragmenter ? I just started having what you describe and plan to try
this. Even though mine says it's not necessary, a look at the analysis
results shows stuff spread everywhere with no idea of what's what.

Thanks Malv.
I've run defrag many times but doing so hasn't alleviated this problem.
Maybe you'll have better luck!
