Increase volume level

Hi,

Don't really know if this is the right NG to ask, but is there a way I
can increase the volume level of a sound file? The sound for the arrival
of new mail in my email client is not loud enough. So I would like to
increase the volume level. But it should be the sound level of the file
itself, just turning up the computer's volume is not an option.

TIA

No. Pick a different sound that is louder or will get your attention better.

You need third-party software in order to "normalize" the volume level
of a particular (*.wav) file. "Audiograbber" has that option:

If it is just a .wav file, you can increase the volume using Sound
Recorder that comes with Windows. Look under
Programs/Accessories/Entertainment in your Start Menu. Open the wav
file in SR, then use Effects/Increase Volume, then save the file when
you are satisfied.

If the file is something more complicated like an MP3, or you want more
control over the adjustment (SR only allows 25% increments in volume),
there are free programs you can download to do the job (for just one of
many examples, look for Audacity).

Good point, however, the Sound Recorder allows for an increase in 25%
steps only which might not be suitable in all cases.

I did in fact indicate that in the part of my post that you did not quote.

Oops, you're correct. I was scanning your message too fast, stopping to
read when the MP3 format was mentioned. Sorry for that. ;)

There is a program "Goldwave" that will allow you to manipulate any
sound file in most formats, including increasing volume. It's
available as shareware.
