I don't believe whatever you're using to receive telephone calls (I assume you're using a
cable modem/omnibox since your e-mail address is from NTL) is connected to Messenger,
however, what exactly do you mean by "cancel"?

Many apologies for being so vague. I was using instant
messenger to contact a friend in Peth Australia when
messages stopped in mid conversation.OK I thought.. she,s
bored with my slow typing and has signed off..but no..on
our next telephone conversation she apologised and said
if her telephone rang it cut off messenger. All I know is
that her ISP is Telstra ..not sure if this is also the
telephone company...Would appreciate any help you can give
Thanks
