incoming calls

I never heard of xp having that feature. How do you set that up?

Why do you expect to? Do you have a V.92 modem and the appropriate
modem-on-hold software? Does your ISP support the function?
 
Look in your "All Programs" menu for a program call MOH or one called Modem
On Hold. Perhaps it will be in your "Control Panel".
You will have to have a V92 modem to use this feature.
The Modem on Hold program is usually found on your Modem Install CD if it is
not all ready installed.

I get a warning - the phone goes 'ring, ring'!

That is what it is suppose to do!
You should then pick up the phone and click "Answer".
