Including 'Appendices' into a document index

I have a document template that has a table of contents for the document headings and it also contains pages of Appendices. What is that best and easiest way to include these appendices as an index. The format of these is different to headings (ie., Headings are 1.0 heading 1, 1.1 heading 2 etc., whereas the appendices will be APPENDIX 01 etc.

Many of my users are inexperienced with word and TOC and styles is a concept we are trying to get them to use.

Define the Appendix style's para properties to be at level one and it
will appear in the TOC.
