what do the green brackets (similar to the blue ones that say the number of
unread messages) mean after the inbox in folders?
 
If the number is in green brackets, it's the number of total items in the
folder. Depending on your version of Outlook (I think), you can choose for
each folder whether you'd like to show the number of unread items or the
number of total items.
