Inbox Repair Tool

I was manually archiving old items from my deleted items folder, and I got an
error message that there was something wrong with the archive.pst file. The
message stated that I should close all mail applications, and use the Inbox
Repair Tool.

Where do I find this tool? Can anyone tell me what might have caused this
error?

We would need more details in order to try to determine the cause but it
would appear your archive file corrupted.

In order to scan your PST for errors, Outlook must be closed.

You can do a file/folder search for scanpst.exe. Once you find it,
double-click on it and follow the instructions which will include browsing to
the location of your archive.pst file so you should know where it is. Run the
scan through and once it has completed, run it again. If it finds further
errors, continue to run it until the PST comes up with a clean scan. Then
open Outlook again and see if it's working correctly again.

Normally the minimum amount of required details would be:

Your version of Outlook
The type of mail account you're using (Exchange, POP3, IMAP, Connector, etc.)
Any error messages but make sure you post the error message in its entirety
Any troubleshooting steps you've already taken

On occasion, it's important to know what operating system you're using and
service pack level.

Where do I find this tool?

If it's not at Start All Programs>Microsoft Office Tools>Inbox Repair Tool
or Start>All Programs>Microsoft Office>Microsoft Office Tools>Inbox Repair
Tool, then on an English Windows PC it will be at
%CommonProgramFiles%\System\MSMAPI\1033\scanpst.,exe
for Outlook 2003 and earlier or
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\scanpst.exe
for Outlook 2007.
