I run office 2003 on my laptop. I recently tried to open a docx file
attachment and I couldn't. Now everytime I try to open an attachment in
windows mail it converts them to 2007 and tries to get me to put in a product
key and accept a users aggrement. Even files that I know were created on
2003 that I e-mail to myself. How do I adjust the settings on windows mail
to correct this?

How is that the fault of Windows Mail?
I assume the same scenario occurs if you save the attachment,
then open it outside of Windows Mail.

This is a Windows file type association issue not Windows Mail normally caused by associating the docx filetype with Msft Word when
the Office 2007 File Converter and Compatibility Pack is not installed in advance of making that association or the converter or
compatibility pack was installed and is corrupt.

If the file converter and compatibility is not installed..
You might try installing the Office 2007 Compatibility Assistant for Office 2003.
Install in the following order
KB 924074 File Format Converter
KB 940289 Compatibility Pack SP1

If they are installed try in the following order
a. remove the file format converter
b. remove the last Office 2003 service pack(this is the only way to remove the Compatibility pack)
c. reinstall the Office Service Pack(SP3 is the latest for Office 2003)
d. install the above two KB's (File Format converter and compatibility pack sp1)in the order noted above.
