Inadvertant reboots

I am running a Dell GX300 with 512 meg ram Windows XP pro, IE 7 and the
latest Flash player and Java. For some time now I have been experiencing
random reboots of my system. It only occurs while on the internet. I have
never had the problem while using any of the software loaded on my machine
such as Office, Roxio Media Creator or others. I t can happen shortly after
opening IE and clicking a link or may not happen for 30 minuets or more. I
can be surfing and the next thing I know I click a link and bam the computer
reboots. I have kept everything updated to my knowledge and installed the
latest drivers for my hardware I can find. It seems as though it is related
to flash player of java but not sure. I know that this morning I was checking
out the new map system the Weather Channel had switched to and my computer
rebooted 3 times while doing this. I was trying to adjust the trasparency and
zoom the map when the reboots occurred. I have tried numerous things to fix
this problem such as moving some of my PCI based cards to different slots, to
no avail. I have also checked the system board for swollen capacitors which
I've run into before on some IBM machines. None swollen I could find. Sure
hope someone can help here before I blow this thing away and reload
everything AGAIN.

This won't fix your problem, but it'll keep your machine from rebooting,
unless the rebooting is caused by a hardware problem. To fix that you need
to fix the hardware problem.

It may also help reading a BSOD. Blue Screen Of Death.

Choosing recovery actions if Windows stops unexpectedly.

Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab |
Click the Settings button under Startup and Recovery |
Under System Failure | UNCheck: Automatically restart |
Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

Automatically restart

That sounds screwy...

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a full
system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and anti-spyware
software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe Mode can
be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to conceal themselves
in areas Windows protects while using them. Safe mode can prevent those
applications access and therefore unprotect the viruses or other malware
allowing for easier removal.

''In safe mode, you have access to only basic files and drivers
(mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, base video, default system
services), just the minimum device drivers required to start Windows.''

Because of that some malware does not load in Safe Mode and is easier to get
rid of.

Thanks. I have unchecked the restart as you described and will see what
happens then repost results.

I ran antivirus (Trend Micro) adaware and spybot. Adaware and spybot in safe
mode. Antivirus would not run safe mode. Everyone of them found some spyware
etc and cleaned them. All were considered low risk but I removed them anyway.
As soon as I finished running these and removing what they found I went right
to the Weather.com site and tried out the new interactive map again. Wham bam
reboot city. there is no blue screen no error to report, nothing. Just click
to change the transparancy setting or zoom the map and bam reboot. I tried it
several times and rebooted everytime. In fact oce it rebooted just loading
the page.

I have the same problem. I use avg free and mcaffe virus scan, spywaredoctor,
adware se, and registry mech. anything they find is fixed or removed, I can
get back on and it does the samething. sometimes after it reboots I will run
everything again to make sure, nothing shows up and it may run ok but it will
shut reboot eventually. all of my error messages have something to do with a
device driver but I have updated everything I know to update.

Shortly after I went to the URL posted earlier I got an error that IE had

The error involved and add on which was Flash9B.ocx

random reboots of my system. It only occurs while on the internet.

That sounds screwy...

UPDATE your antivirus software and run a full system scan.

UPDATE whatever anti-spyware applications that you have and run a
full system scan with each one.

You might want to start in Safe Mode to run your antivirus and
anti-spyware software.

Running a full system antivirus scan or anti-spyware scan in Safe
Mode can be a good idea. Some viruses and other malware like to
conceal themselves in areas Windows protects while using them.
Safe mode can prevent those applications access and therefore
unprotect the viruses or other malware allowing for easier removal.

''In safe mode, you have access to only basic files and drivers
(mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, base video, default system
services), just the minimum device drivers required to start
Windows.''

Because of that some malware does not load in Safe Mode and is
easier to get rid of.

I am running a Dell GX300 with 512 meg ram Windows XP pro, IE 7 and
the latest Flash player and Java. For some time now I have been
experiencing random reboots of my system. It only occurs while on
the internet. I have never had the problem while using any of the
software loaded on my machine such as Office, Roxio Media Creator
or others. I t can happen shortly after opening IE and clicking a
link or may not happen for 30 minuets or more. I can be surfing
and the next thing I know I click a link and bam the computer
reboots. I have kept everything updated to my knowledge and
installed the latest drivers for my hardware I can find. It seems
as though it is related to flash player of java but not sure. I
know that this morning I was checking out the new map system the
Weather Channel had switched to and my computer rebooted 3 times
while doing this. I was trying to adjust the trasparency and zoom
the map when the reboots occurred. I have tried numerous things to
fix this problem such as moving some of my PCI based cards to
different slots, to no avail. I have also checked the system board
for swollen capacitors which I've run into before on some IBM
machines. None swollen I could find. Sure hope someone can help
here before I blow this thing away and reload everything AGAIN.

Any clues in the Event Viewer around the times of the reboots?

Event ID & the Event Source are very important.

To open the Event Viewer...
Start | Run | Type: eventvwr | Click OK

For any Events that seem related to the problem...

Double click the event in Event Viewer | Click: the button below the second
arrow (looks like two pages) [[Copies the details of the event to the
Clipboard.]] | Paste into Notepad | Also click on:
For more information, see Help and Support Center at

This can also be very useful.

You need to have the Event ID & the Event Source. Microsoft product: --All
Products-- is usually good enough. Be careful when scrolling down in the
page so that Microsoft product: doesn't change on you.

To view Windows XP Events and Errors, type the Source (for example, Print)
and/or the Event code (for example, 20) into the ID field, then click the Go
button. Source and Event codes may be found in the Event Viewer logs.

zooming in and out before it rebooted this time.

Maybe this will help? I have suspected the problem to be connected to
Flash Player for some time. Either that or Java.

I ran antivirus (Trend Micro) adaware and spybot. Adaware and spybot
in safe mode. Antivirus would not run safe mode. Everyone of them
found some spyware etc and cleaned them. All were considered low
risk but I removed them anyway. As soon as I finished running these
and removing what they found I went right to the Weather.com site
and tried out the new interactive map again. Wham bam reboot city.
there is no blue screen no error to report, nothing. Just click to
change the transparancy setting or zoom the map and bam reboot. I
tried it several times and rebooted everytime. In fact oce it
rebooted just loading the page.

Did the antivirus or anti-spyware turn up anything?
