In place upgrade question

Hi Guys,

I'm having a problem. As a favor for a friend I upgraded his XP pro system,
with a mobo, cpu, and memory swap. He put XP on it with an upgrade disk
that he got at Best Buy. Originally he was running 89se.

I boot fm the cd, and it gets to the point where it's going to install the
OS, but it doesn't offer the "to Repair hit R "option. It allows 3 things;
install to current windows folder, install to a new windows folder, or exit.

A little into the boot it offers the repair console option, and that works.
It takes me to a dos prompt, from there I don't know what to do so that it
will boot into the existing windows installation. Re-activation isn't an
issue because I think I can just call them and they will do it over the
phone or something.

Thanks in advance for any ideas. I know this isn't the perfect newsgroup
for this question but I've been unsuccessful elsewhere.

To do an Upgrade install
Put the upgrade CD in with the computer running and choose upgrade (do not
choose full).

Thanks for the links. The problem is this:
"At this point an option to press R to enter the Recovery Console is
displayed. Do not select this option.

On the Windows XP Licensing Agreement screen, press F8 to agree to the
license agreement.

Make sure that your current installation of Windows XP is selected in the
box, and then press the R key to repair Windows XP.

Follow the instructions on the screen to complete Setup. "

It follows the link exactly until it gets here, and then I don't get the
"then press the R key to repair Windows XP" option. It only offers to
install to the same directory with a caution that everything will be
overwritten and will possibly empty the "my docs" folder, to exit, or to
install to a new folder.

At this point does your Windows installation show up in the box along with
other partitions you have created, and a small unpartitioned space, you will
need to use your Arrow Keys to choose the partition that has the OS
installed on it before the repair option will be available.

Yes, that's what I've been doing. I have it up now.

unpartitoned space 8 MB

When I highlight the line " c: partition1 (c) [ntfs] 57232 MB , 38807 MB
free "
and hit enter, it takes me to the next screen which says:

You chose to install windows xp on a partition that contains another
operating system. Installing windows xp on this partition might cause the
other operating system to function improperly.

CAUTION: Installing multiple operating systems on a single partition is not
recommended. To learn more about installing multiple operating systems on a
single computer, see such and such web site.

To continue setup using this partition, press C.
To select a different partition, press ESC.

So I press C which brings up the option of
formatting the partition or leaving it alone, so I highlight
Leave the current file system intact {no changes}
and hit enter, which leads me to:

CAUTION: A /windows folder already exists that may contain a windows
installation. If you continue,the existing windows installation will be
overwritten.

All files, subfolders, user accounts, applications, security and desktop
settings for that windows installation swill be deleted. The My Documents
folder ;may also be deleted.

To use the folder and delete the existing windows installation in it, press
L.
To use a different folder, press ESC.
To quit setup, Press F3
so hitting ESC brings me to:

Setup needs to copy windows xp files onto your hard disk. Select the folder
in which the files should be copied:

A highlighted bar has \Windows in it.

I can change that to a different name, it continues:

To change the suggested location, press the backspace key to delete
characters, and then type the name of the folder where you want to install
windows .

So that's my problem, I'm not offered the repair option, only to quit,
install over the one there, or install to a new folder.

I've seen this problem, so you aren't crazy. I have never found a
solution to it that dit not involve a completely fresh install of XP.

Thanks for the reality check!
There must be a way around this. I'll keep looking for a while and if I
find it, I'll post it.

Since the last time, I advanced the CMOS clock 7 months to see if the 180
days not booted thing helped.; it didn't.

success!
I spent all day trying to swap out the problem drive in two other systems, a
P2 350, and P2 450, trying to get it to come up as a slave or boot them. No
dice. Tried silly jumper settings, no dice. The other systems didn't see
the drive. I have no idea why. The 350 is running 98, the 450 XP. My
kitchen table looks like a tornado came through and stirred up all my
computer parts. So, sadly, admitting defeat, I put the systems all back
together again.
I figured I'd try it one last time, and don't you know it? There was the
repair hit R option!
I'm gonna go have a beer.
