Improving images for a faster download

No that I have images on my site, is there some feature that can tweak images
so a web page will open faster? Compressing images maybe? Thanks.
 
The feature is *you*. Optimize your images in a graphics editor. If it's a
GIF image, reduce the number of colors until you lose the desired look. If
it's a JPG image, reduce the quality until you lose the desired look. And
by all means make them dimensionally smaller if you can, or reduce the
number of graphics on the page if you can.

And note that the recommended weight for an entire web page is 40-45K total.
That doesn't give you much room for alot of graphic weight.
 
Yes, if it is JPEGs increasing the compression vil make them smaller in
size. Also making them smaller in width and/or height will reduce size.
For GIFs decreasing the number of colors used also will help.
This of course always comes with a penalty in quality of the image.
However it may not be noticeable on the Web.

That would, of course, have nothing to do with download time. It is,
however, a good idea to add an informative alt attribute to each context
specific image (not to spacer images, although to get a valid page you would
need to add an empty one).
 
Try IrfanView it's a free download, great for optimizing, converting...easy to use. Or if you're already using an image editor you can optimize them in that. I prefer using IrfanView, even though I use Photoshop to manipulate the images, IrfanView's Batch Processing procedure doesn't require a doctorate technospeak like Photoshop's does.

Yes, but you need to that in an image editor - Frontpage is merely the tool for
"putting it all together".
 
I have downloaded IrfanView. With Irfan how/where do I optimize an image to
optimize the web page download speed? Thanks.
 
Just use File Save As and set your .jpg properties
- for real optimization you need a real image editor like Image Ready

You have to individually optimize each image. Here are some guidelines -

1. Make each image as dimensionally small as possible - big dimensions are
heavy images.
2. Optimize GIF images by reducing the number of colors - a 256 color GIF
will be heavier than a 24 color GIF.
3. Optimize JPG images by reducing the quality of the image. A 90% JPG
will be heavier than a 70% JPG (and may well be only slightly better)
 
Murray... You can do it in Batch Conversion as well..I love it..I did 100 images in about 2 secnds - for albums I use 70% on jpgs you can't see the difference and they're at least 1/3 the size.

If you have a lot of images to do...first experiment on one and see what percentage compression will be ok...then File | Batch Conversion | Options and you'll see a percentage slider - you can do a zillion at a time.

Yeah - but I don't trust it for that kind of thing. Some images need the
few percent of extra quality to look right.

welll of course! you don't wanna do this blindly to 1000 images without eyeballing them first.
