Inserted Images not copied to Web Folder when Saving

O

OutlookGuy

When using Frontpage 2002 on another PC (running Windows NT/2000), I'd insert
an image, then save the page. Frontpage would ask me if I'd like to save the
inserted images as well, after approving, those images would be copied to
that site's folder.

I copied the My Webs folder from one PC to another, then installed FP 2002
on the new PC (running Windows XP). But now when I save a page, I'm not
asked if I'd like to save the new images. When I look at the source code,
the path to that image is to the folder in My Pictures that I used. I don't
know if this is a feature that I need to enable, or if this change is
relative to having created a "My Webs" folder before installing Frontpage.
Worse comes to worst, I can always move the My Webs folder and try
reinstalling Frontpage, but maybe there's a quick fix.

O

OutlookGuy

As a follow up to my own original post, I moved the "My Webs" folder outside
of the My Documents folder, uninstalled Frontpage and then reinstalled it.
The problem still occurs when I try to save a page with new images inserted,
its not prompting me to save the images as well.

Are you opening a web site (File->Open Web) before opening the pages?
It sounds like you are not doing this.
In any case, using FrontPage to save the images into the web will cause
the images to deteriorate in quality. FP2002 applies a further 10%
compression on JPG images when saved by FrontPage. File->Import the
images into the open web site (or drag them from Windows Explorer into
the FrontPage folder list or folder view) before inserting them onto
the page - inserting onto the page can then be done by simply dragging
the images onto the page from the folder/file list.

Hello, I'm not opening a website before opening the pages. The entire time
that I have used Frontpage, I haven't done that. So if Frontpage is not
prompting me to save the included files, something else has changed that
isn't related to how a web or file is opened.

I understand about the compression, that's something I'm okay with. I'm
just confused as to why Frontpage no longer asks me if I want to save the
inserted files.

You *must* have a web site and open it first before working on pages in
FrontPage.

You must open your website first, otherwise you're working on a "loose" page
that has no connection with a web site. The only time you might actually
work with a loose page is to compile a html email. You'll need to create a
web site out of your loose files.

The only times when FrontPage will prompt you to save images is when you
have a web site open. When working with loose pages there will not be
a prompt, and all links will be to absolute file system locations.
You MUST have a website open if you wish to avoid this type of links,
and get the Save images prompt.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I got it to work again without having to open
a web. I hadn't opened a web any time I made edits to any pages before, but
it gave me an idea. I created a test folder, added an html page to it, and
then attempted to open a web for that folder. Frontpage prompted me to
create a web for that particular folder, when I approved, it added three
subfolders to it (_private, _vti_cnf, _derived, _vti_pvt). I realized that
these folders were originally in the My Webs root folder, but I hadn't copied
them over. I copied them from the test folder to the My Webs folder. Sure
enough, FP is now prompting me to save the embedded files no matter what page
I'm editing of any folder. I don't have any webs open. So technically, its
necessary to actually create a web, though you don't need to open a web for
it to prompt you to save the images.

And, when FP prompts to save embedded images, that's another problem, as FP
will change the quality. That's another reason to have a web open and
import the images before inserting on a page..FP will leave them alone.

I have the book called "FrontPage Inside Out" by Jim Buyens and in this book
it states"
"Opening a Web is such a common task that FrontPage provides many ways to
do it. Here are some additional ways to open a Web:
Open a Web page that resides in a FrontPage-based Web. FrontPage opens both
the specified file and the Web that contains it."

If the above is true, then you are both correct. OutlookGuy is just opening
a page (but it opens the web as well)
and Tom is correct in that OutlookGuy needs to open the web.

Just what I read....... take it for what it is worth. Just quoting from the
book I have.

However you will find that it work a lot better when you first open a web, then the page, as well as
always importing content into the current open web prior to using it in the web.

The operative word is: "....resides IN a FrontPage-based Web. ..." by
reading the entire thread here it is possible that the OP never had created
a web site in FP to begin with and was instead working with "loose" pages.

|I have the book called "FrontPage Inside Out" by Jim Buyens and in this
book
| it states"
| "Opening a Web is such a common task that FrontPage provides many ways to
| do it. Here are some additional ways to open a Web:
| Open a Web page that resides in a FrontPage-based Web. FrontPage opens
both
| the specified file and the Web that contains it."
|
| If the above is true, then you are both correct. OutlookGuy is just
opening
| a page (but it opens the web as well)
| and Tom is correct in that OutlookGuy needs to open the web.
|
| Just what I read....... take it for what it is worth. Just quoting from
the

he said:
I created a test folder, added an html page to it, and then attempted to
open a web for that folder. Frontpage prompted me to
CREATE A WEB for that particular folder, when I approved, it added three
subfolders to it (_private, _vti_cnf, _derived, _vti_pvt).
I would say that he did create a web because FP made him do it.
Why isn't that creating a web site?
