Impossible to get rid of Wireless Network Icon?

I have a notebook with dock, XP Pro installed and built in wireless capability.

At the office when undocked and using wireless we must use the Intel networking client - NOT the Windows networking
client.

When it's docked, the dock itself is wired into the LAN of course.

But the problem is that the Windows wireless icon ALWAYS appears down in the taskbar with a red X! Essentially it's
duplicative of the Intel icon (that flashes red, yellow green...) redundant and not needed (since I use the Intel client
for wireless (and the Windows client for wired).

I've tried but can't figure out how to shut off the Windows Wireless icon, service or whatever...

Suggestions?

Only way I know of is to Create a shortcut to the connection (on your
Desktop for example) then when you're connected via cable right click
the icon and select Disable. When you want to connect via wireless
right click the icon and select Enable. Not ideal but it'll get rid of
the icon when you're not using it. To stop it showing when you are
using it just right click the icon in Network Connections, Properties
and take the tick out of 'Show icon in notification area when
connected'

Start >> Settings >> Taskbar & StartMenu go to the lower section (Notification
area)
Click Customize
Clock on the item (make sure you have the right one)
Change the setting to Hide when inactive

LoadHawg,

Mr C's advice for creating a shortcut works alright. But you should point
the shortcut to the Device Manager, then disable or enable. For a one-click
shortcut to Device Manager, right-click on desktop, create a 'new' shortcut,
copy & paste this location, C:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc
