importing video

I have finished my moviemaker movie using video from my video camera, but
would like to add some video that is already on my computer which came from
my Sony Cyber-shot camera. It appears to be an .mpg file but when I try to
import it into moviemaker it says 'it contains no information'. From what I
have seen on the forum, I gather moviemaker doesn't like anything with an m.
What is the best format to change my video into?? and can I do that on
Windows XP or do I need to purchase a special program and if so what's the
best one?? Can anyone help.

You can use one of several free ones, linked to from here.
Convert to WMV, as the avi options are often divx which is also no good.
