importing PST - how do i find the inbox repair tool?

I have had a near catastrophic failure of Outlook. I am running a windows XP
home laptop with Office 2000 installed. Outlook has shown signs of
instability recently so I backed up the data in a pst file. this seemed to
go through correctly. I have uninstalled and reinstalled office and all
other applications are working correctly accept glitches in a special Access
2000 programme I use in conjunction with Outlook 2000. Whilst trying to
reimport from the .PST stored in my documents using the wizard I "import from
another file or program - (.pst)" point it to the correct path and recieve
the message "properties for this information service must be defined prior to
use". I have checked that it is not 'read only'. If I continue in receive
the error message "errors have have been detected in the file C:(~path etc)
..Quit all mail enabled applications, and then use the inbox repair tool." i
can't work out what properties should be changed or where to find the inbox
repair tool. Can you help please?

Can you open the PST using File -> Open -> Outlook Data File? If so, do
this and drag your data from the PST into your new folders (this is the
recommended method anyway).

Joe, thanks for your prompt response. I have tried opening as directed but
only get the option of a .PST. When opened using Outlook, after a couple of
minutes it appears as an attachment to an e-mail! I have not shut down
Outlook/Windows and restarted/rebooted, however, and would hope that this is
not a mistake!

What else do you expect?

Do not open it in WIndows Explorer. Open it in Outlook.

The Inbox Repair Tool is %CommonProgramFiles%\system\MSMAPI\1033\scanpst.exe

It is also in Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office
Tools -> Inbox Repair Tool.

Well.. that's what it's supposed to do, heh. You said you had a .PST file
and were having problems using the Import function. Instead of trying to
use the Import/Export utility, go through Outlook and do File -> Open ->
Outlook Data File and open the .PST directly from within Outlook. As long
as the PST file is not corrupted you should be able view the contents of it
and drag data from that folder to the existing folder.
