Importing Outlook Express Messages

I cannot import any of my old e-mails from Outlook Express into Windows
Mail. I can see all of my .dbx files, but appearantly these are not the
files Windows Mail is looking for. Also, when I do a spell check, it
advises me that this language is not available anymore and I should choose a
new one in the spelling options dialogue. Where is that dialogue? Any help
would be appreciated.

When you browse to the folder where you .dbx files are stored Windows Mail
will put the name of that folder twice in the path it will use (you see that
path on your screen), that's the reason why import won't work. I manually
changed/typed the path and then the import worked fine. It's also important
that the .dbx files aren't marked as read only.

It depends on the size of your .dbx files/folder I guess but I copied that
folder to the local disc of my new pc. But probably import will also work
through a networkconnection (pointing the import wizard to a share on your
old computer). If you don't have a networkconnection you'll have to copy the
..dbx files through a USB-stick/Cd/DVD. But not importing old messages and
start with a clean mailbox isn't that bad either! ;-)

In the main Windows Mail screen, go to Tools, Options, Spelling.
Pick a language other than English, click Apply. Select English,
click Apply. It should work now.

What issues are you having? If you follow those directions exactly, you
should be able to import just fine.

I followed the direction as written, but when I go the folder where I put
the .DBX files from Outlook Express the folder looks empty to Windows Mail.
It doesn't matter where I put them on the drive. I even tried the easy
transfer (or what ever Vista calls it and it didn't work either. I forget
what the message was there.

Any ideas why it can't see the files in the folder?

Thanks.

I had the same experience, the doubling of directory name, and I was unable
to edit it manually.

I burned OE files from my XP machine to DVD disc, then tried to import them
into Windows Mail on a Vista laptop. Nothing doing.

I tried on every level: Owner/Local Settings/Application Data/Identities,
the import facility not recognizing anything, and when I go into the numbered
OE directory under Identities, no luck either. I think there should be a
directory named "Outlook Express" probably under Microsoft, but I can't find
it, and the size of the numbered OE directory clearly indicates that's where
the stuff is. Help? Thanks, Janos

Right click the files and choose Properties. Make sure they are not Hidden
or Read Only.
Make sure you're pointing at the folder and not the DBX files.

That was the ticket. I just duplicated the path so what ever Windows Mail
was looking for was there and it worked. Thanks for the help!
