Importing Outlook Express emails into Windows Mail

Hi all

Have been having trouble trying to import my Outlook Express “saved†emails
into Windows Mail.

The error message that I get says:-

“No messages can be found in this folder or another application is running
that has the required files open. Please select another folder or try closing
applications that may have files open.â€

The only option that I get to import my messages is “Import mail from an OE6
store directoryâ€.

The other option “Import mail from an OE6 Identity†is greyed out and I
cannot select it.

So, how do I import my emails from Outlook Express into Windows Mail?

Or should I forget Windows Mail and use Outlook 2007 instead?

Please help with step-by-step advice.

Thanks for your help.

Look forward to all responses.

Hi Steve

Many thanks for your reply - have now bookmarked the OE Backup site for
further, future reference (in case I need the info again) and have followed
the instructions exactly.

It worked perfectly - thanks again and please keep up the good work here on
the groups.

Have a good day!!!

Also forgot to ask:-

How do I go about keeping the Imported Inbox folder so that I will be able
to download all of my NEW emails into that folder as opposed to the default
one that is initially created in Windows Mail?

I would like to be able to download ALL of my waiting new emails into my
imported Inbox folder, and not the other Inbox folder under where it says
Local Folders?

My actual emails Inbox folder with all of my emails shows under the heading
Imported folder - any ideas as to how I can go about doing so?

The other Inbox folder is empty?

Thanks again...

Any particular reason why you want to use the Inbox under Imported
folders? Why not drag all the imported stuff to the normal folders where
you had it under OE?

If you still want to use only the Imported Inbox, you can do so by
creating a Message Rule (Tools, Message Rules, Mail, New).

I'm glad you got the import working.

Just select all the messages in the imported inbox and choose to move them
to the Inbox.

But I would suggest you parcel out messages from the inbox into different
folders rather than having every message always sit in the inbox. It gets
unmanageable that way.

Hi Steve

Thanks for your reply - I am revisiting this topic for discussion after
quite a while as I now working with Windows Vista and want to have a look at
my options for all of my emails under it.

Would you suggest Windows Mail or Outlook (2007) for your emails? - what do
you prefer and why?

Please could you also answer the 2 following questions:-

1. Like Outlook Express, there is/was a program called OEQB (Outlook Express
Quick Backup) which I still use a lot in Windows XP to backup and restore all
of my emails. Can OEQB still be used in Windows Vista for Windows Mail or
not? - would it work like OEQB or not?

2. Quote:- “Just select all the messages in the imported inbox and choose to
move them to the Inbox. But I would suggest you parcel out messages from the
inbox into different folders rather than having every message always sit in
the inbox. It gets
unmanageable that way.â€

I have already done this for my messages in the Inbox. I have all of my
current ones sitting in the Inbox, and later this year, I will create a
folder for these probably called Emails 2007, and then I will move all of my
current emails into that folder and so on...My old emails are already in
their respective folders titled Emails 2004, 2005 and so on...

However, on importing my emails, I have noticed that while my Inbox emails
import okay, if I try and make subfolders for my Sent Items, why is it that
all of the emails in the Sent Items do not say “To They all say “From -
how do I correct this?

If I do change the header in the Layout from “To†to “Fromâ€, it changes once
and then goes back to saying From the next time I start Windows Mail? Is this
a bug, or can you suggest a workaround that I can use?

Please help with your advice.

Thanks for your help.

I look forward to your response.

Hi again

Also forgot to ask - like the spell-check problem of Outlook Express being
broken if Office 2007 is installed, does the same thing happen in Windows
Mail if Office 2007 is installed in Windows Vista?

If yes, please let me know of a fix? - BTW, does Windows Mail spell-check in
UK English, or is it US English by default?

How would I get UK English to work in Windows Mail like I have done in
Outlook Express in Windows XP? - I installed an earlier version of a
spellchecker from Office 2000 in Windows XP and now Outlook Express spell
checks fine in UK English.

Please help with your advice.

Thanks for your help.

I look forward to your response.

User created folders all use the same layout as Inbox and Deleted Items.
The From column is on the left.
I add a To column on the right.

Sent Items, Outbox, and Drafts use a layout with To on the left.

No.

US English.

At this time there is no UK English spellchecker for Windows Mail, and
we don't know when (if ever) one will be provided. Unlike OE, Windows Mail
is not able to use Office dictionaries.
Please also reply or let me know about my backup question -

Sorry, I have no expertise regarding backup.

It sort of breaks it but if you go to Tools | Options | Spelling, select
German and click Apply and then select English and click Apply | OK it will
be back to checking American English.

I'm very happy that Microsoft makes this service available, but God forbid
they should put such a simple answer in its help files. If it weren't for you
MVPs, we'd be out of luck.

Hi to all that replied: -

Just popping back to say a big thanks for all of your help on this topic.

Having read what you all had to say, I have decided that Windows Mail was
not the option for me and that I have switched from Outlook Express to
Outlook 2007 on both Windows XP and Vista and all works fine.

Thanks once again - please keep up the good work.
