Importing Mail from Outlook Express

J

jnjmitch

I just upgraded to a new system with Vista. I have all of my old mail
on a separate drive that is networked to my current system. When I
get to the directory under "Identities" (a long string of letters and
numbers) I am told that no messages could be found.

This is what it should look like:

C:\Documents and Settings\(MY NAME)\Local Settings\Application Data
\Identities\{EE7EAF9B-D54D-417F-A971-2AE7C80758A0}\Microsoft\Outlook
Express

However, there are no further folders to be found in the {EE7EAF...}
directory, which is where I understand that the Inbox.dbx file would
be stored.

Why can't I get find the .dbx file?

Note that I've also tried to import from another system that is
running OE and XP rather than Vista Mail, and I can't find it through
there either. So it doesn't seem to be a Vista problem.

You might see if this help offers any information on where to find the
..dbx files:

<http://www.vista4beginners.com/Migrate-from-Outlook-Express-to-Windows-Mail>

Also, once you find the files, it may help to copy them to a directory
on your new computer, make sure the copies are read-write instead
of readonly, and then import them into Windows Mail.

Thanks for the links. Problem is, I can't see the dbx files in the
directory that they are supposed to be in. I am told that the
{EE7...} folder is empty. It is listed as "read only". Would that
have anything to do with it?

They are hidden files. You will have to set Windows Explorer and Search to
show hidden files and folders.

That option is set, but it still shows the folder as empty.

I CAN find the file in the right directory when I do a search.
However, when trying to import it through Vista or viewing through
Windows Explorer, I am told that the folder is empty.

Now I copied that file to a new directory on the new system on which
Vista is running. "Show hidden files" IS checked. However, I am
still given the error message "No messages can be found in this
folder". The file IS visible when viewing it with Windows Explorer.

When you try to import the .dbx files into WM, navigate to the folder
containing them, but DO NOT OPEN that folder.
If you open it, it will produce an incorrect path, like C:\Temp\Temp instead
of C:\Temp

You can use these programs to extract any messages from the DBX files.
However, if they're 137 KB or less in size they're probably empty.

DBXtract ($7): http://www.oehelp.com/DBXtract/Default.aspx
There is also a free alternative to DBXtract, though not for DBXpress:
http://www.insideoe.com/resources/tools.htm#macallan
DBXpress: ($25) http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/Default.aspx

I've seen that happen and have corrected for it based on
recommendations from other sites. Even with the correct path it's
still giving me the error message.

When I'm browsing from the import page using Mail, I cannot find any
folders past the {...} directory. My understanding is that there are
two more folders after that: Microsoft, Outlook, and then the
inbox.dbx file. Why can't I get past the {...} directory when
browsing? Or why will it not acknowledge messages when I direct the
browser to the new folder in which I copied them following a search?

I also get the "no messages found" error when importing OE6 to Windws Mail.
I have not seen a post with a fix. Files are not read only directory is
properly selected. Anyone?

See the part here about the path error:http://www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#oe2wm

I am confident that this is not the issue. For one, I have seen the
incorrect path and have corrected for that, but it still tells me that
no messages can be found. Two, I have tried importing into Outlook
Express on XP on another system that is networked to my computer, and
I get the same error. For some reason these .dbx files are not being
recognized.

Now my latest is that I was able to find the folders when importing
"folders.dbx" (as opposed to inbox.dbx). However, it only imports
about 1/3 of my archived messages. Any suggestions there?

I don't understand.
You import from the folder that holds the DBX files, Folders.dbx does not
contain any messages but it has to be there to tell the import what folders
to import from.
