Importing folders from Outlook

V

Vista newbie

I was using Outlook (not Outlook Express) running under Windows XP on my old
computer. I carefully backed up all my folders in which I keep my e-mail
messages. I want to import the folders into Windows Mail running under
Windows Vista on my new computer. When I try, the menu invites me to select
the format I want to import e-mail from and I select Microsoft Outlook. I
then get an error message saying "Messages cannot be imported from the MAPI
client". Of course , this means nothing to me. Can anyone help ? Does it
mean that I must go out and buy a new version of Outlook ?

Windows Mail cannot import a .pst file unless Outlook is installed on the
Vista computer.
What version of Outlook do you have? Version 2003 works fine, version 2002
works, but won't remember passwords.

You can install Outlook, copy the .pst to the Vista computer, open the .pst
with Outlook, then you can import into Windows Mail.

Or,
If you have Outlook installed on an XP computer, import the .pst data into
Outlook Express, copy the .dbx files and .wab file to the Vista computer,
and import into Windows Mail.

You either need to install Outlook on your new machine, or get access to the
old machine.

Dave - Your suggestion below to copy dbx files into the VISTA computer is
exactly what I was looking for (recent question from "John" today) but how do
I do that - I'm new to Vista - where should the dbx files reside - in my XP
machine everything was under "Docs and Settings" - where is the Vista
equivalent of this location.

Thanks so much,

John

If you used Outlook Express (not Outlook, which is a different program) on
the old computer, see
