Ok I have read most of the posts and now realize that importing / expoting
isnt the smartest move: however we have been exporting the .pst files
faithfully each week for a very long time now. I did have occasion to import
a while back and it seemed to work ok. but this time i get the message " file
access is denied. you dont have permission required to access the file
D:\blah blah.pst I copied it to the H.D. and looked at the properties and the
read only box was clear. I also tried to open it directly from outlook useing
the file > open > outlook data folder and the message says this is not a
personel folder file. All of this is in XP pro, office 2003 all of the
updates are current. Help please!

You have corrupted your PST file, which happens often when you export the
PST instead of closing Outlook and copying it.
There is a slim chance you can repair it with the Inbox Repair Tool.
If not, restore from a good backup.
