Importing .dbx file back into Outlook Express

Paul

Hi and thanks for the support,

My girlfriend accidentally deleted my entire "deleted
messages" folder in Outlook Express. Luckily I my
recycle bin is Norton Protected and I was able to recover
the .dbx "deleted messages" file to my desktop, however I
cannot figure out how to import this file back into OE
using the Import Wizard. The Wizard will only allow you
to import messages from another email program (Netscape,
Outlook, etc.)If I try to drag and drop it, it opens a
new message with the .dbx file as an attachment.

Any ideas how to get these messages back into my deleted
messages folder?

TIA!

You need to put the file back in it's original location.

Typically:
C:\Documents and Settings\{User Name}\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{long alpha numeric string}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Posted 'as is'. If there are any spelling and/or grammar mistakes, they
were a direct result of my fingers and brain not being synchronized or my
lack of caffeine.

just restore it from the recycle bin.
Why anyone should want to though I don't know, unless you accidentally
deleted a message or messages that you didn't mean to - mine gets cleared
every time I close down.

You can do all this via Windows Explorer... be sure you
check your options to "show hidden files" so that you can
see the .dbx files within where the email files are kept
and be sure to close Outlook express. Once you locate the
folder (can be done via Search looking for *.dbx files,
but again, be sure to look in "hidden" files), do two
things: first, simply rename the existing deleted files
dbx (assuming a new one was created after you deleted the
previous one) to some backup name so you don't lose
anything there. Second, drag the deleted messages dbx
file from the recycle bin you want back in to that email
folder. When you open express, you should see all your
old deleted files...

Tim
