Import files from digital camera

I am unable to import a 210MB video from my Kodak EasyShare Camera using the
Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with
SP1. The error I get is, "The I/O operation has been aborted because of
either a thread exit or an application request." Smaller videos pose no
problem at all and I am able to import the 210MB file using the Kodak
EasyShare software. However, the EasyShare software is just hateful and I
prefer not to have it on my machine at all. Any suggestions? Thanks in
advance for any help.

Do you have a USB memory card reader?
The card reader will be seen as a removable
disk and you can drag/drop or copy/paste the
image files to a folder on your hard drive.

No, I do not have a memory card reader. I know they are available for
~$15CAD, but I was hoping to find a different solution. I thought that there
may be a Windows update avaialble that would increase the allowable file size
for transfer from a digital camera?

it may or may not be a solution,
however, maybe we can take a look
at something:

can you tell me how much
ram memory you have?

and

how much virtual memory
do you have as well?

In addition to John's suggestion, get rid of the Easy Share software.

The word "hateful" describes ES quite well in my opinion.

Let Windows see your Camera as a Camera and copy files from that to your hard
drive or use a card reader per John.

I purchased a card reader and works like a charm. No more Easy Share<g>

ok, well those numbers
may reveal a slight problem.

firstly, ram is 640. although
there are variations in
installing ram of differing sizes,
i wonder if your 640 may be
a problem?

double check to ensure that
your windows is aknowledging
640 megs by going to

start > run> msinfo32.

the main page will
notate total available mem. if
it doesnt say 640 then this is
a problem. if it does say 640
then we are ok after all.

secondly, virtual mem is 192.
this may be a problem, especially
if you are working with a 250 meg
file.

windows has several options
to manage v.m.. my suggestion
is to set the size of the vm to a
fixed/custom size.

the size should be
initial = 2 and max = 960

(because 960 = 640 x 1.5)

double check your windows
againg by using the new information
above.

if you decide to make any changes
to the vm, reboot afterwards and make another
attempt at handling that large file
again.

The Sytem Information lists:
Total Physical Memory 640.00 MB
Available Physical Memory 406.21 MB

I think this is OK?

I went ahead and changed the virtual memory to initial = 2 and max = 960.
It was still set for the original 128MB RAM that came installed on my
computer, so I am glad you pointed that out. However, still no luck
importing the 210MB video. :(

Something else I noted in the System Info was:
Total Virtual Memory 2.14 GB
Available Virtual Memory 1.73 GB

Is that OK considering the settings I just discussed?

yeh, that large
vm size notated in
msinfo is ok.

there is a reasonable
explanation for it. but
it doesn't come to mind
at this time. however it is nothing
to worry about as well.

at least we know that
memory should not be
an issue, although sometimes
it can be.

however, it would not
be unreasonable to beleive
that the kodak program has
exclusive programming to
handle large files of this
magnitude, especially because
they are proprietary files.

maybe since your v.m. was
set to a respectable size now,
you may have better luck with using
that kodak software again. maybe
you will need to reinstall it too.

also, what i suggest is to ensure
that you turn off/disable all
non essential software, like
antiviral, antispywares, etc.

you don't need to be connected
to the internet as well.

the above will allocate more
resources for that kodak software
and that large file and get a better
responsiveness from the pc.

if the kodak software can access
that large file then it will likely
be able to convert that file for
use by windows as well.

these are just thoughts and i
have never used the kodak software.

another thing you might try is using
safemode and see if windows can
access that large file. not sure if
it will help but it wouldn't hurt to
try out.

the above are only suggestions
that you can try out in the interim...
