Import Excel file to Access

When I attempt to import an Excel file to Access, I get the error message
"type mismatch". I am using Excel 2002 and Access 2002. Several years ago,
when I was using Excel 97 and Access 97, i was able to successfully import an
Excel file to Access, and append it to a database. Now with the same file I
get the "type mismatch" error message with Excel 2002 and Access 2002. Help
please.

Are you appending to an existing table? and does that table have an
autonumber field in it? try importing to a new table, and then use an append
query to append the data from there to the existing table.

I tried to create a new table using Table Wizard and was unsuccessful. It
took some digging to understand that Table Wizard is not operating properly.
When I open Table Wizard, the columns Sample Tables, Sample fields and Fields
are all blank. I tried re-registering the files accwiz.dll, msexcl40.dll,
msxbse40.dll, mspdox40.dll, mstext40.dll, as suggested by John Nurick
elsewhere in this group. That did not change the operation of the Table
Wizard. I created a new table without an auto number, using Design, and when
I tried to import my Excel file, I got the error message "There is no object
in this control". Previously the message was "Type mismatch". Do you have any
further suggestions?

What I was suggesting was to let the import wizard create the table for you
(tell it to import to a new table); you can specify the name of the table
that is to be created. Then you can use an append query to copy the data
from that new table to your permanent table.

As for the table wizard problems, you might try repairing Office to see if
that fixes the problem.

Not knowing the table structure that you created, I cannot provide any
specific suggestions about the error that you received "There is no
object..." when you tried to import to it.

Ken, I solved my problem last week. The cause was quite obscure and you
probably could not have guessed what it was. I uninstalled and reinstalled
Office XP twice to no effect. In KB832671 "Known issues when you install
Office XP SP3", under the topic "How to determine whether the update is
installed", I found the updated versions of the Office program files. When I
checked the versions of my programs, using Help, About...., I found that the
versions of several programs were not up to date! Using Windows Explorer, I
went to the directory of the Office programs Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office10\ and started each program using the individual exe file. When
I checked the versions of the programs, all were up to date. When I looked
for additional copies of the exe files on my computer, I found three of them
in my Desktop directory, one of them being Access. Of course these files were
never updated. They were put in the Desktop directory about two years ago
when I got this computer and I created shortcuts on my desktop for the Office
programs. I don't understand how the exe files were copied, but I was
probably careless in creating the shortcuts. So three of the icons were
pointing to old exe files. After I carefully cleaned up the short cuts and
started the current version of the program, the Access wizards worked
properly and importing the Excel file was a piece of cake. As you suggested,
I could not import to an existing table, but had to import to a new table.
Then I created an append query and easily appended the data to the existing
table. Thanks for your help.
