I am having troubles writing DVDs. The drive appears to burn the disc just
fine but it won't verify afterward. I have tried this with Norton Ghost 2003,
Sonic Digital Media 8.5(formally Roxio) and Compaq's PC Recovery Disc
Creator. The results are the same with all of them, The strange thing is I
have no problem writing CDs. I am running windows XP Home edition with SP2
and all the latest service patches. Can anyone help me short of a full blown
OS reinstall? I would like to avoid that at all costs. Especially since I
don't have an original Windows disc. You know how HP\Compaq is about that.
Any help would be appreciated
Rick

What sort of files are you trying to write? If they are, fx, MPG files, you
need to install the appropriate codecs that came with your DVD drive, or
download them from the manufacturer's site.

I am trying to write data files. The PC Recovery program for Compaq computers
only writes a bootable recovery disc nothing more. Norton Ghost only wries a
Disc recovery image. Any more questions?

Ghost 2003 can check the itegrity of it's backups, from the manual:
<quote>
Setting the image integrity check default

You can set a default option for Norton Ghost to perform an integrity check of an
image file after it has been created and before it is restored.
Some CD-RW drives eject a CD once an image has been saved to it. If this is
preventing the integrity check, then ensure that this option is not selected, and
perform an integrity check using the Image Integrity Check Wizard.

See “Checking the integrity of an image file†on page 58. (See Below)

To set Norton Ghost to perform an integrity check on an image file
1 In the Ghost Basic window, click Options.
2 In the Norton Ghost 2003 Options dialog box, click Image Integrity check.
3 Check Always perform an image integrity check to set the default.
4 Click OK.

Checking the integrity of an image file

You can check the integrity of a Ghost image file. An integrity check ensures that
the data read from the image file is the same as the data written to the image file.

Norton Ghost performs a dummy restore of the image file. It does not check that the
data on the disk is the same as the data in the image file.

To check the integrity of an image file

1 In the Ghost Basic window, click Ghost Advanced, and then click Image Integrity
Check.
2 Click Next.
3 In the Create Image Integrity Check Wizard window, click Browse and find the image
file that you want to verify.
4 If you want to view the contents of the image file in Ghost Explorer, click

Open image in Ghost Explorer.
See “Viewing image files†on page 119.

5 Click Next.
6 If you want to set advanced settings for the verification, then click Advanced
Settings.

See “Adding command-line switches to a task†on page 47.

7 Click Next.
8 In the Important Information dialog box, if you do not want to view this warning
again, click Don’t show this screen again, and then click Next.
9 Click Run Now to start the image verification.

That is the settings that I always use. I check the integrity of the image
after it is burned . That way I don't make a backup that I think is good but
turns out to be bad. The Compaq PC Recovery program does this by default too.
It has the same results when I use it. The disc fails the integrity check
