Imap command could not be sent

I was trying to set up windows mail for the first time, al was going well
then I got the following message,
Host IMAP cold not be found, please verify that you have entered the server
name correctly.
Your IMAP command could not be sent to the server, due to non - network
errors.This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system.

What do I need to do to rectify this? this is all new to me, thanks

IMAP is not a valid server name, although it is valid as a protocol. Ask
your
email provider for their instructions for setting up to use their email
servers,
which should include the correct server names. Many people choose their
internet providers as their email providers also, since most internet
accounts
include one or more email accounts. If they haven't written instructions
for
Windows Mail yet, their instructions for Outlook Express should also work
under Windows Mail if they don't call for the HTTP protocol. The
instructions
are probably somewhere on their web site. Or, you could tell us who your
email provider is, and see if anyone here already knows where to find their
instructions.

IMAP is not a valid server name. The correct server names depends on
which email provider you are using, so ask them. Many people choose
their internet providers as their email providers also, since most internet
accounts include one or more email accounts. If they haven't written
instructions for Windows Mail yet, their instructions for Outlook Express
should also work under Windows Mail if they don't call for the HTTP
protocol. The instructions are probably somewhere on their web site.
Or, you could tell us who your email provider is and see if anyone here
already knows where to find their instructions.

Is your problem identical to what "pcbltd" reported?
Normally we would expect each person posting here to describe their
own symptoms. Often there are subtle differences which require
different solutions.

Delete the IMAP account.
Start a new account and specify POP3 for the protocol.

Note that neither IMAP nor POP3 is a valid server name, although both
are valid protocols.

You do not have the correct mail server name.
Who is your email service provider? Or to ask that question another way,
what is the part of your email address after the @ symbol?
Your mail provider will typically have a web page that shows how to
set up an email program. If you need more help, tell us the name of
your email service provider.

I am also trying to set up windows mail using IMAP. I use AOL and do have
the instructions giving the server name as imap.aol.com for incoming and
smtp.aol.com for outgoing, using port 587, but after setting it all up I get
the message that the imap command could not be sent due to non-network
errors. Also, aol instructions say that it requires authenticated smtp for
outgoing but when I tried this then I got the error message failed. None of
the authenticated methods supported by imap server are supported by this
computer.

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

The computer will do whatever it is told to do by the email program.

A server is a big computer in the sky where your emails are temporarily
stored until you are ready to download them. But you don't need to know
that in order to use Windows Mail successfully.

You have to use whatever they provide.
