I was trying to set up windows mail for the first time, al was going well
then I got the following message,
Host IMAP cold not be found, please verify that you have entered the server
name correctly.
Your IMAP command could not be sent to the server, due to non - network
errors. This could, for example, indicate a lack of memory on your system.

What do I need to do to rectify this? this is all new to me, thanks

IMAP is not a valid server name. Contact your email provider for
instructions.

Well you need some details from your ISP, do NOT put your real email
address in this group because it will get stolen and abused, but please
tell us who your ISP is and the last part of the email address AFTER the
@ sign. It will be something like comcast.net if they supply your email
address.

Then someone can point you to the likely setup page with the info you need.

IMAP is not a valid server name, even though it it a valid protocol.
Ask your email provider for their instructions for setting up to use
their email servers, which should include the correct server names.
If they haven't written instructions for Windows Mail yet, their
instructions for Outlook Express should also work under Windows
Mail if they don't call for the HTTP protocol. Many people choose
their internet providers as their email providers also, since most
internet accounts include one of more email accounts. The
instructions are probably somewhere on their web site. Or, you
could tell us who your email provider is and see if anyone here
already knows where to find their instructions.

Assuming that you want to connect your yahoo.com account to
Windows Mail, see here:

how do you set up the account with microsoft? I dont know if its a pop3 or
imap, and dont know what to put in the other box below it, could you please
help me and email me at (e-mail address removed) thank you.

You don't set up an account with Microsoft.
You follow whatever setup directions are published on your mail
provider's website.

However, I see you have a Yahoo email address. Is that your
only email address? US-based free Yahoo accounts have webmail
access only, no POP access. Windows Mail handles POP mail but not
webmail. There are two Yahoo solutions:

1. How did you access Yahoo mail before? If you are happy with
webmail via your browser, you can continue to use that.

2. Pay Yahoo to get their premium "Mail Plus" service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/overview/index.html
and use the special settings for that service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-14.html

If you are OK with using a non-Yahoo email address, you have two other
solutions:
3. Use the email address assigned to you by your ISP.
4. Get a free Gmail account.

Let us know if you need more help with one of those four options.

..
IMAP is not a valid server name. The correct name depends on which
email provider you are are trying to use. Your internet provider should
have given you an email address to use; tell us the part of that address
after the @ and we'll try to look up the other information you need.

Debra Lussier,
Here are the setting I use for both AOL/AIM IMAP/POP3 Mail, while connected to
Comcast:

POP3 Settings for AOL Mail:
Incoming Server:
pop.aol.com Port: 110
Outgoing Mail Server:
smtp.aol.com Port: 587

POP3 Settings for AIM Mail:
Incoming Server:
pop.aim.com Port: 110
Outgoing Mail Server:
smtp.aim.com Port: 587

Remember POP3 Server will only retrieve mail in the INBOX folder, not any user
created folders. Also you will need to either have VistaMail set to leave
messages on Server, if you still want to view them through AOL/AIM web mail
interface, or set the account up as an IMAP acct.

IMAP Settings for AOL Mail:
Incoming Server:
imap.aol.com Port: 143
Outgoing Mail Server:
smtp.aim.com Port: 587

IMAP Settings for AIM Mail:
Incoming Server:
imap.aim.com Port: 143
Outgoing Mail Server:
smtp.aim.com Port: 587

Using IMAP will show the additional folders, and the messages that they contain,
of your AOL/AIM mail account, other than just the INBOX folder.

how do i find the pop3 for aol to set up my msw email...what do i put there?

Dave,
Actually they do provide POP3 access, but there has been times that their POP3
servers have had problems, especially on the weekends. I feel that AOL promotes
the IMAP process more, because it is what AOL users wanted and were used to.
They wanted to have access to the other AOL folders that were present on the web
mail interface, in the mail application they set up the account in.

The following help page from AOL shows how to set up POP3 & IMAP:

AOL provides IMAP access, not POP3.

The devil is in the details.
Right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.
