Image changed to black rectangle

I have Win XP SP2 with all the updates etc. In My Documents long ago I saved
a few JPG images. Suddenly, yesterday, when I opened this folder, a few of
those images became black rectangles. No image editor (Irfan, MS Viewer,
Paint, etc.) could restore or open this images... May someone tell me why
this happened? How to restore these images? How to prevent this from
happening again?
Your suggestions will be appreciated.
 
Thanks for your suggestion. I tried this software. Unfortunately, it did not
help in my case. After the "fix", the black rectangle became a smaller
one...
