I'm trying to Print Screen to Paint, and it's not working. Please

I'm trying to Print Screen on a DVD, to get a screenshot. When I go to paint
and paste it, it pastes, and I can cut and paste the part I want, but when I
save it, it doesn't work right. It acts like the pasted screen image is just
transparent, it's ridiculously frustrating, and I've tried everything...

Copy protection, most likely on a Hollywood DVD.

Hi frustrated

How are you saving the screenshot, which file type? When you say it
doesn't work right, what exactly do you mean? Are you looking at the
saved file in Paint again, or in some other program, for example? Can
you describe a bit more clearly what's happening?

Actually, this is due to the fact that computer DVD players, much like
DIVX as "overlay." Think of it like the map behind a weatherman on the
news. The map isn't actually behind him. He's standing in front of a
green wall and the map is digitally added in with a video mixer, taking
up any space which is tinted the colour of the backdrop. Your DVD
player is using a very similar trick. When you pasted it into Paint,
you probably had the DVD open still, so it was able to access the image
to overlay and place that on the backdrop you put into Paint. Once the
DVD was closed, however, you lost that information. The image from the
movie was never saved to your file, only the backdrop.

Unfortunately, there's no easy way around this. I believe I've heard of
screen printers which can capture overlay images, but I don't know the
names of any nor am I sure of their legality.

Safe journeys,

Sorry. Having keyboard problems, as outlined in my own question earlier.
This should read as follows:

"Actually, this is due to the fact that computer DVD players, much like
DIVX and many recent AVI and MPEG players, use an imaging system known
as "overlay.""

Thanks, llerwech, you're right I think, but what program would I use?
Snag it is garbage by the way

Yeah, I think that's right too. I don't know if Irfanview's image capture
could do it, I guess if you are stuck it might be worth a try. It started
off as a very small but useful utility but has expanded in capability so
much I've lost track of what it might be able to do. Do you want to have a
look here and see if anything gives a clue? www.irfanview.com

It's a handy program to have and reliable so although I don't know if it
will do what you need for this it may be useful to you in future.

Agree. As a former technical writer, I found SnagIt great
for tasks such as yours. If an image appears on your
screen, you can capture it. And you can enjoy a free trail.
$39.99 purchase.

Another terrific SnagIt-like program is Print Key Pro. I use
this at home. $19.99 purchase. If you add Print Key Pro to
your StartUp tasks, from then on, all you need do is press the
"Print" key to invoke Print Key Pro. You can then print directly to
your printer, save image as one of several file types, and you
can even annotate text on the Print Key image before printing/saving
as a file. You can copy the Print Key on-screen image to the
clipboard and paste it into other application documents such as
Word (paste special.)

Using its easy-to-understand UI, you can select which part of
the screen you want to capture (crop), specify the screen's
resolution, specify Save As file types (.jpg, .bmp. .pcx, .tif),
and the list goes on and on. I'm very pleased with both SnagIt
and Print Key Pro.

Good luck!

Try saving the screen shot to Irfanview or Xnview. I've also had some
niggles with Paint. Never did with older versions of Paint tho. Odd.
