You are having difficulties because you are using the rather awful web
interface to these newsgroups. It is better to use a real newsreader,
and Windows Mail is very easy to set up. Here is information about that:

Since you are using the web interface, you may not realize that this is
really a newsgroup. You will get far more out of this resource if you
learn to use a newsreader. There are many good newsreaders for Windows,
but you can use Windows Mail since you already have it. Put "newsgroups"
into Windows Mail Help to see how.

Here are some links to information about newsgroups:

I've asked this before without any answers but will try again. I cannot start
a new post-nothing happens when I try. I can only reply to existing posts. I
wonder what the problem is.

As you may have been told before (I can't remember whether I replied
to your previous question), you are using the awful web interface to
participate in these newsgroups, and many people using it have such
problems. It's the slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method there
is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook
Express, which comes with Windows. See
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

What happens when you press on the New Post button on Windows Mail's toolbar?

A drop down box appears with 3 choices;
Question
Suggestion for microsoft
General comment
Nothing happens when I click any of them.

Try this: While IN a newsgroup, MENU bar (press ALT if not visible), Message,
New Message.

While you are IN a newsgroup do you have a button on the TOOLBAR labeled "New
Post" with a little downward pointing arrow on it's right side?

It says "New" not New post but it has the little arrow pointing downward on
it's right side. That is what I have been clicking to try and make a new post
but I only get the drop down box with 3 choices which I described.

While IN a newsgroup, right click on the Toolbar, select Customize, in the left
hand window scroll down to find NEW POST, highlight it and click the Add button
(or use the MENU method to post a new message). The Toolbars change, so be sure
you are IN a newsgroup (or it's server, such as Microsoft Communities).

Ken Blake I wasn't told that before. What a proceedure. I'm a bit reluctant
to try it as I use certain genealogy newsgroups everyday and they don't use
msnews.microsoft for the NNTP server. It seems to me that when I first got
Vista I had to go in and change the NNTP from Microsoft to another to view my
genealogy newsgroups. Does that make sense?

Ah, that explains it.
Why on earth would anyone use a web interface to read newsgroups?

Dave that is what I have been doing-selecting question and signing in but
nothing happens.

Cal Bear What do you mean "while in a newsgroup"-like right where I am now? I
don't get any "customize" by right clicking on a toolbar. I do get "Customize
command bar" but not the rest of what you mention.

It takes about two minutes to add an NNTP server. Go to your ISP's web site and
find the name of their NNTP server and follow the instructions for Outlook
Express.

Sorry, I did not realize that you were using the web interface.

Please, do yourself a big, big favor and access newsgroups using Windows Mail.

Ken Blake I wasn't told that before.

OK. As I said, I didn't remember whether I had replied saying that
earlier.

What a proceedure.

You make it sound like it's difficult, when in fact, it's very
easy--*much* easier than what you're doing.

It makes sense in that I understand what you mean, but it's not
correct. Two points:

1. You don't have to use msnews.microsoft.com. These microsoft
newsgroups are also carried on most other servers, probably including
the one you use for your genealogy newsgroups.

2. Alternatively, Outlook Express, and most newsreaders, let you
easily use multiple news servers. Under Vista, Windows Mail also lets
you easily do this. I personally use four different news servers. I
used to do that with Outlook Express, but I'm currently using Forte
Agent. Under Vista, Windows Mail also lets you easily do this.

So I followed Ken Blake's suggestion and followed the instructions on the
link he provided to Set up Outlook Express Newsreader. Down to # 7 was fine.
For # 8 I subscribed to Windows Vista general but what is next. I still can't
post new posts.
