I'm having trouble with Vista

G

Gotermeyer

Been using Home Premium SP1 32 bit for several months, file copying
seems way slower than XP and it crashes a lot for no apparent reason.
I mostly use for web surfing and downloading music and some work
related document writing. I've been thinking of trying Ubuntu, since
Vista doesn't seem stable. Opinions?

Yes, very strong ones! Ask in a Linux forum troll.

More information is needed, please.

I copy large files all of the time to and from external USB HDrives and I
have no problem with Vista Home Premium SP1. It's just as fast as XP.
Sometimes faster.
It does get slow when I do a direct tranfer or copy of video files from one
USB external HD to another USB external HD. Each HD is hooked up on USB ports

Sinner,

Ease up there, someone thinking of using Ubuntu because problems their
having with Vista sure the heck don't make them a Troll. Offering help to
the OP is far more productive than the name calling.

The slow file copying is still a Vista problem.

What do you mean by "it crashes"? Provided the hardware and drivers are OK,
Vista is extremely robust and extremely difficult to crash.* Are you
referring to genuine blue-screen-of-death Vista crashes? Or crashes of the
programs you use?

SteveT

*That is a big "provided", of course. But the VAST majority of Vista
crashes are caused by bad hardware or bad drivers.

Downloading music via P2P is a surefire way to pick up crap that will slow
your machine up and cause it to crash..

Run spyware removal procedures and see what happens..

Like a true MS fanboy, Mike assumes that the poster is using something
like eMule when, in fact, it could be iTunes which doesn't carry and
malware. Why is it that the MS fanboys always assume that posters are
doing something illegal? I guess they subscribe to the same crap that
WPA and WGA stand for: guilty until proven innocent.

Well, file copying has been a problem for many. Considering that moving
data is a fundamental requirement for any OS this is really not good.
Part of the problem seems t be "Explorer" which falls over where other
methods do not and part of the problem is within the OS itself. In fact
W2000 and XP had the "Explorer" problem too. I had two stable Vista
machines for a few months until I installed SP1, both are now showing
different problems and as of last night one refuses to boot at all.

As to the other comments about Ubuntu and other Linux in general I'd say
this. If you want a basic but solid OS then Debian is probably the
choice, but is a little harder to get running. Ubuntu is more "Fancy"
but just as with Windows the more flashy stuff that gets installed the
greater the chance of a fault causing you to lose stability. In general
though Ubuntu is still far more stable than Vista. Don't fall into the
trap of installing "Everything" - you will end up with some stuff that
simply does not work well.

What is the justification for the insult here Alias? When did you become
a jack of all trades master of none? When did you become an expert's
expert on anything? When did you anoint yourself the NG critic acting as
judge, jury, and executioner passing judgment on someone?

This is troll like behavior out of you, which you exhibit so very well.

Downloading music via P2P is a surefire way to pick up crap that will slow
your machine up and cause it to crash..

I was told that I would get help and accurate answers from a MVP. You
come back with don't use P2P that is a surefire way to pick up crap.
Well the crap I used was Urge which is a click away on the IE7
browser. Are you saying Microsoft offers crap?
Run spyware removal procedures and see what happens..

Always do. There is no spyware or virus on my system.

Anymore guesses, I thought a MVP was suppose to know.

Crash, hang up, stall, take your pick. Windows crashing, not my
programs. For example I keep seeing Explorer say it encountered a
problem and needs to close. This happens when nothing but Vista is
running.

Try it out.
You'll either like it, or not.

I still hate that the Title bars/Window borders disappear when I move
the mouse over the Min/Max/Close buttons.

Stinking compiz !

All you told the group

1. It is slower than XP while transferring files

It can be but not always..

2. It crashes a lot

Is that it? No error messages or anything that might indicate why it is
crashing? Is there something specific you are doing just before it crashes

3. You download music

You didn't say where, and P2P sites can be dangerous

Maybe you should be a bit more specific, and in being so, we can maybe give
more specific answers..

You depend upon detection software to tell you what is happening, and
you lean on it like a crutch and a security blanket. If the O/S can be
fooled, then anything that runs with the O/S can be fooled too.
Anymore guesses, I thought a MVP was suppose to know.

It's your machine. And it's no one else's machine but yours. You don't
know what is happening on your own machine? You go to p2p(s) and
download load stuff while you toss security and safe hex out the door.
There is no telling what is on your machine that's undetected that can
cause trouble.

He's got a point though Mike. The original poster did in no way indicate
even the remotest hint of any P2P downloads. So considering all the
legality issues associated around P2P, it is a bit rude and arrogant to
assume that it is the cause of his problems.

A simple "If" placed correctly in your statement would do wonders for it
and change it from an arrogant assumption to a helpful suggestion.

There was no mention of using a legal music download source either..

The op claims crashes etc and downloading form P2P sites is a good way to
incite that

It was no arrogant assumption, purely a statement of fact which may or may
not answer as to why the crashes occur.

If people want specific answers, they should be more specific in what they
ask..

Maybe you should be more considerate of people asking for help and not
jump to conclusions or be defensive. I expected more from a MVP. It
seems you have a thing for P2P sites. I never use them, yet you
immediately jumped to that conclusion. As far as being specific maybe
that would be a good suggestion on how you should frame your replies
being a MVP and all rather than your shotgun response which totally
missed the mark.

It appears some here are more interested in furthering their agenda
than actually trying to help. I have already said in a reply to
someone else the crash most annoying to me is Windows Explorer and my
downloading of music was with Urge.
