I'm Depressed - Linksys Router | Cable Modem | Power Cut

S

Up until yesterday morning I was happy. My broadband host machine was
feeding my win98se machine downstairs for internet & files.

Then we had a powercut and it messed up the network for some reason and I'm
not clever enough to set it back up again (and the tech support at Linksys
are CERTAINLY not clever enough - they can barely speak English never mind
fix my network).

When I connect the modem direct to the computer I can connect to the
internet fine. But I cannot connect to the internet when I use my router.
All wires are plugged in correctly, everything on the hardware side of
things is fine but it just won't let me online and it won't connect to the
other computer.

The problem seems to be centred around the "network connections" page in
Control Panel. Currently, when I right-click/properties the LAN item,
everything seems fine and TCP/IP properties is set to "obtain IP
automatically"

However, that is without the router connected. When I connect the route and
run the network wizard a "network bridge" item is placed in the "network
connections" page and then when I right-click/properties on the LAN, I don't
see the menu which includes the TCP/IP option, I just see some text telling
me that "this adapter is connected to the network bridge" or something like
that.

I am seriously depressed now. I've spent maybe 3 hours on the phone to
linksys tech support IN THE PHILLIPINES and I have no idea how much that is
gonna cost me on the phone bill!! They don't know what they are doing. All
they do is tell me turn the computer off, turn modem off, turn back on check
IP address then do the same again standing on 1 leg.

Any help would be great. Why would the power cut interrupt my network
settings? It was fine yesterday before the powercut. grrrrr.

thanks
Mark

just in case it is useful, my IP is currently reading as 213.106.72.142 but
this is not whilst connected to the router. This is directly using my cable
modem to the PC.

I've seen this happen before with power cut issues. What has happened is that the router gets fried and no longer works properly. You MAY need to purchase a new router.

I too have had the same experiance. After going through
all of the troubleshooting steps with Linksys support
(via India), it was concluded that the router was fried
and I had to buy a new one.

I hope not. All the lights work and all the connectors seem to do the right
thing.
Anyone else have experience with this? I had a surge protector on so it
shouldn't have caused any damage

I am having a similar problem, except without the "network bridge
connection" appearing. I can get to the internet without the router
connected, but connect the router and I get nothing. I can access the router
from the workstation, but not the internet. ALSO, I have replaced the router
and have the same problem. I have done everything else described in this
post.

You should set the whole thing up again from scratch.
Unplug the cables and delete the network connection(s)
from the computers. Connect the modem and get a
connection then connect the router. After you go through
the set-up wizzard and get online with each computer you
can set-up the workgroup again. There must have been a
problem in the 1st place so starting from scratch would
be best. By the way, you are right about Linksys' tech
support.

I fixed my problem. I shut down the system. Turned it back on and logged in locally as Admin. Launched Word and accepted the EULA. Logged off then logged on as user and had no problem

Good Luck

What is EULA?
What does Word have to do with the network setup?
