illegal filename ? HELP

Byrd

I am trying to backup a nealy full 120 gb hard drive. I can't get it to work.
I keep getting a message that says there is a file with an illegal name. How
in the heck do I find 1 or more files with illegal filenames so I can fix
them?

Back in the old days of DOS I don't think this would be a problem because
the file wouldn't have ever been created.

Myabe I'll try that. I have been trying syncToy because its pretty easy.
Sorry about the double posts but the post software told my posts failed.

I really would like to find some sort of file management utility that would
find illegal filenames or files that aren't kosher. Is there such a thing?

Everyday, Windows throws me a curve of some sort and the newer the version
to more curves. I yearn for the old days and Programs like PC Tools. Geez in
the day that thing could do everything.

With respect...the double post would not happen if you used a
newsreader instead of that horrible web interface.

There probably is some software to check illegal filenames or files
that aren't kosher but the only one I am aware of is the one I
suggested. You can do a test backup in it. You don't have to use it
for a real backup. Give it a go.

Sadly, these may be now the "old days" with XP and PC Tools is now a
distant memory.

I'm told SYNCTOY doesn't like files with the tilde character (~). Maybe
others also.

The tilde (~) character is reserved for the translation of the long
filenames to the older DOS 8.3 filenames.
