Anyone else having problems with using Microsoft Mail with Comcast? Like
most others that have recently posted, I all of a sudden in the last week or
so, can't get outgoing or incoming. I have played around with the Ports, but
nothing seems to work.

I also saw on some comcast pages earlier today that they are upgrading their
servers and mail platform. Anyone know more on that? That may be the
problem.

I refuse to call Comcast, and waste 4 hours of my time for them to tell me
again it's not their problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Comcast is trying to make users switch to a different port number, but has
been rather poor at telling their users about this. See if this helps:

Hal -- Thanks but that didn't work either. Earlier I played around and got
it to be able to receive emails, but I still can't send.

Do you get an error message when you try to send? If so, right-click
on the error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without that complete error message.

Gary -- This is what I get.
The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'test', Account:
'mail.comcast.net', Server: 'smtp.comcast.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 587,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

That type of problem is often caused by interference from a
non-compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus must be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

If turning off the email scanning function does not resolve your problem,
consider upgrading to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to
suffering bad effects from overly aggressive antivirus programs.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

I use McAfee, and already tried disabling it, but still got the same error.

Guess I will go to using Comcast Webmail.

McAfee antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Sometimes it takes a while before symptoms start showing up.
The only way you can prove or disprove that McAfee is the culprit is to
uninstall it, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=107083&lc=1033

If you decide to replace McAfee, there are free antivirus programs
which are more compatible with Windows Mail:

Instead of switching to a different antivirus, another option is to upgrade
to Windows Live Mail (WLM), which is more resistant to the adverse effects
of aggressive antivirus products: http://get.live.com/wlmail/overview

Even with WLM, you must disable email scanning in the antivirus,
for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Gary -

Thanks for your help on this. I am going to remain with McAfee, as it is
provided free to Comcast subscribers. I will just begin using the web-based
mail program they provide.

Again, thanks for your help - at least you helped me pin-point my problem.
