IIS - Do I Really Need It?

Platform is W2K Professional.
I'm running IIS because it had to be loaded in order to install FrontPage
Extensions. IIS really slows my network down and all web browsing is slow.
Is there anyway to unload it when not needed yet load it when it is needed
(on the fly). Even if I can kill it from the Task Manager?

This really brings up the question as to ... do I really need it? The
server must have FP Ext., that's understandable. But why must I have
extensions and IIS running?

Since Front Page extensions are used on an IIS server and as far as I know
have no other functional value, there is no point to having an IIS extension
without IIS installed?

I'm sorry but I don't understand your response.
I think, when you say IIS extension, you meant to say FrontPage Extensions.

At anyrate, my real question is ... Are FP Ext and/or IIS required on the
client side (my computer) for doing webpages? I understand that the
Extensions are on the Server Side and offer great benifits which I use when
designing my webpage. But what about the client side? Are FP Ext. and/or
IIS required?
