If no xp recovery or startup disk

My HP did not come with any recovery or startup discs, you can make your own,
unfortunately I did not, and need to do a repair. If someone else has a
windows xp disc can it be installed on my computer so I can get in and do a
repair. I have to burn my own recovery discs with my PC and now my new
laptop..

You cannot use a different CD to do a repair of your system. The CD key code
won't match.

Also, repair installs can only be done with the retail version of XP. The
restore CD, which you did not make, will not do a repair install; it will
only do a 'restore' back to the same configuration as when the computer was
purchased.

Your recovery discs would probably be unique in some way - either by
make/model, date, installed applications or some mixture of above.

Contact the tech support for the computer maker and purchase a copy of the
recovery CDs.

Nope, not true. There is no Product Key on the CD itself. It would be
prohibitively expensive to make each CD individually.

What's necessary is only that the CD match the Product Key with respect to
Home vs. Professional, Full vs. Upgrade, and Retail vs. OEM.

Also, repair installs can only be done with the retail version of XP.

Also not true. Although OEM restore CDs won't work, OEM installation CDs
will.

My HP came with a partitioned hard drive containing system recovery options,
have a look for something like this on the start menu.
