If I don't "work live" in FP2003?

I had wanted to load FP2003 on my Vista machine, but got nervous reading
about the crashing issue with inserting hyperlinks, etc.

This comment by Gary Williams REALLY intrigues me: "3. Keep the FP, keep the
Vista, but don't work live on your web site. Publish the entire site to your
local hard drive on Vista computer; update it as needed and then publish it"

This is the way I've always used FP - I was never able to get the "work
live" option to work...but then realized that maintaining off-line gave me a
backup copy (which I had to use once when the server crashed and they said
it'd take quite a while to restore and if I could just re-publish, my web
site would be back up and running right away).

So...question #1 is: Do you think I'd be able to load FP2003 and not run
into the crashing/hyperlink problem?

Question #2 is: I read another comment about not installing "shared
components". I'm not positive what this means. Is that something I'll be
able to easily see if I do a Custom install? (i.e., is that as simple as
unclicking a checkbox?) And if I DON'T install the "shared components", will
that cause me problems with FP usage?

Thanks so much for any help! I'd surely appreciate it.

#1 - Some people do not have the problem, most do. The workaround to
the problem is to add hyperlinks manually in Code or Split View.

#2 - Shared components are those tools shared with Office, such as
Spelling, Picture Manager.
These are labelled as Shared Features and Office Tools in the Custom
install dialogue, and can easily be marked as "Not Available" (right
click and choose that option). Use this option if you have a different
version of Office installed - if you have the same version of Office as
FrontPage, or no other parts of Office (Word, Excel etc.) are not
installed at all, then install everything.

Ron, thank you TONS for this advice. I've just selected "Not Available" in
the custom install dialog box, but am wondering if I should also mark "Not
Available" the option for ".NET Programmability Support"? Wouldn't I already
have that installed with Vista Home Premium?

Thank you again!

Ron, forgot to say, I've got Office 2007 with Word, Access, Excel yada yad
installed. Interestingly, the FP2003 installer couldn't find Word2007 as a
valid component (I put in an old Office 97 cd and that made it work).

Vista has the .NET framework installed. The option for ".NET
Programmability Support" allows FrontPage to use the framework. Note
that FrontPage will use .NET 1.4, not 2.0

The CD you have is an Upgrade, not a DOWNgrade - it needs a previous
version of FrontPage, not a later version of Office.

Ron, thanks again for your help. It appears that I'm all set. I just
published a test page. Life is good once more.
