Hello all. Internet Explorer (6.0, came with SP2 download; I'm running XP
Pro) stopped working a few days ago, giving me the following message:
"Runtime Error!
Prgoram: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
The Application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information. "
Unfortunately, it costs money to ask the Microsoft support team for help
directly so I have come here!
I've tried downloading ie6setup.exe and installing it, but it tells me it's
already installed and quits. I've tried changing the Internet Explorer 6
IsInstalled key in the registry to 0 (trick it into thinking it's not
installed, I guess) but ie6setup.exe still won't budge. Guess my trickery
wasn't sly enough to fool it...
I have also tried running the built-in system integrity check to no avail,
and I have attempted to run ie6setup.exe tagged with /Q to skip the prompt.
The latter looks like it is working and appears to download and install
files, but when I try to run my "newly downloaded" version of IE, I get the
same bloody error message.
Please advise. The way I see it I can either eradicate IE from my system
entirely (a heinous act that will likely void every piece of hardware and
software in my apartment) or reinstall XP. Considering the amount of
computer-related schoolwork I've neglegted trying to fix this, neither option
appeals to me much.
