IExplore.exe will not open/launch

Hello (anyone interested)!

This post is both a problem and solution. I just wanted to spread the
word so that others could hopefully benefit by saving themselves the
3-4 hours that it just took me to solve this problem.

THE SYSTEM:
Windows XP
IE6 SP2

THE PROBLEM:
Clicking any Internet Explorer shortcut, choosing Start > Programs >
Internet Explorer (icon), or navigating to iexplore.exe in windows
explorer (C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe) and double
clicking the executable for internet explorer did nothing. I could not
launch IExplore.exe from anywhere. Furthermore, I could not reinstall
by running: ie6setup.exe because it would simply return an error:
"Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer alraedy
installed on this system. Setup cannot continue."

I think I accidentally created the problem because this only started to
happen after I deleted several programs using the add/remove programs
interface. My guess is that some .dll or other files needed by the IE
browser were deleted when I accepted "delete all files" for some of the
programs I wanted to get rid of.

THE SOLUTION:
I did several things, and then iexplore.exe started to work again. So,
although i'm not 100% sure which of the following did the trick...this
is what i did (in no particular order - sorry)...

A) re-register specific DLL files
see support.microsoft.com - for Article ID: 281679
I did steps 1-4 under "RESOLUTION"....to include all 7 .dll files. I
did not restart the computer b/c i had a lengthy virus scan in
progress. since i didn't restart, i also didn't get to the "verify
that the following registry values...." section under "Windows XP and
Windows 2000 only"

B) re-register DLLs
Start > Run > [...path to iexplore.exe]
path is probably something like: C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe

C ) disable third-party browser extension (requires restart):
start > settings > control panel > internet options > advanced tab >
under browsing
....this probably didn't do it, but i never restarted

D) Edit regisry for branding component
see: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304872
....this probably didn't do the trick, b/c afterward, you're supposed to
be able to re-install IE6....well, i tried by running ie6setup.exe, and
i still got the same error message: "Setup has detected...."

tah-dah...it just started working again.

If you have any questions, please ask.

One of the things that save you all this long time is Ghost program. 5 mn
and the Partition/HDD is restored.
