IEEE 1394 Problems

I have purchased an external DVD writer with Ieee
connection.
When I installed drivers it moved other drive letters and
named itself as another drive
When I connect the IEEE DVD Writer it is not sensed
Removed & reinstalled drivers and re-connected writer in
correct order - still the ieee connection is not sensed !
MSINFO shows a sharing of the input on the bus but no
conflicts - disabled other device and carried out above
still the same the Ieee connection is still not sensed.
Can anyone help ...frustration is now really setting in
