IE7 - should I "upgrade"

R

RJK

I've been keeping half an eye on IE7, (I understand it went "final" a little
while ago ?), I haven't been offered it via automatic updates, (I have that
set to download updates but, let me choose when to install them etc.), so
does IE7 come along by itself or do I manually have to go and get it ?
Should I bother to get it ?
Will security patches continue to be released for IE6 ?
Obviously I would Ghost my drive before installing it, in case it decides to
be unhappy implanting itself in my Windows XP Home ed. platform that's
oldish ! ...damn! no label on my drive C:\ ...I always label my boot-drive
with the date" ...anyone know how I can find out when I installed XP Home
ed. the last time ?

I've been subscribed to, and, now and again reading through Vista NG - I
haen't gleaned much in there !
I suppose what I should have asked is, "Will installing IE7 into my
reasonably well maintained XP Home ed. SP2 platform be problem free, (as is
usually the case), or will it trash it ? :)

My personal rule of the thumb is to wait as long as possible before
upgrading any software on my machine, unless the new software has some new
feature that I urgently require. By waiting you eliminate the hassle of
dealing with any bugs and security issues that have not been resolved.

If you wait for a totally bug free system, you will wait forever.

It will be improved and worth waiting for while those good hearted souls
who are technologically capable enough to examine it for undisclosed WGA
like "extras" that might be bundled in with it give it a clean bill of
health or not.

Programs that interact with it will be improved and makes waiting
worthwhile.

Same holds true for Vista. Only fanboys and those who don't know better
will rush into Vista and IE7. There is no need for either.

To amend this, one more group will have to install Vista and IE7: repair
techs, although I am sure most of them are smart enough to do it on a
test machine.

I never said you had to wait forever. New software always has bugs and
kinks that need to be worked out. By waiting until well after the initial
roll-out you will have a far less likelyhood of having issues when
installing it. And in the case of IE where MS has bound it so tightly to
the OS that you can barely tell what's what anymore I would wait
doubly-long. But like I said, this is only my guideline; I don't upgrade
for the sake of upgrading.

"IE7 to be distributed via Automatic Updates"

Personally I'm going to wait until it's available on AU.

I'm not all that keen about what I've been hearing about IE7 but I'll
probably go with it anyway...

For IE users, IE 7 will probably be like the best thing since sliced bread.
If the interface is intimidating and different, you can make it look and
behave exactly like IE 6. You can ask around here if you need to know how
to get your menus back, etc, but resistance to an IE release will be all but
futile. Better get used to it quickly.

You might as well add developers and testers to that group. I'm not
impressed by either Vista or IE7, but I will eventually move to those out of
necessity.

But I do appreciate being lumped together with "fanboys" and "those who
don't know better". Got any more similar broad, sweeping statements like
this while you're at it?

You're right. I forgot about them.

"Lumped together"? Those are just the people who will buy it, each for
their own reason. If a computer tech and a newbie get on a plane
together that doesn't mean they are "lumped together". Please read for
content.

Resistance is futile.
