IE7 Problems

Pat Miller

I could not find The following newsgroup: Those with IE7-specific questions
or comments are asked to post to and seek support in this newsgroup:
microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

If you cannot answer this post from this group, please give me directions
for locating the above listed.

I have IE 7 which has many problems. I downloaded IE 7, to my desktop with
the thought that I would replace the old with the new.

I cannot locate Windows Internet Explorer 7 on the "Currently Installed
Programs and Updates" list. There are 5 software updates but no application
installation listed.

Any information you can give me on how to replace my current
browser with the new one will be greatly appreciated.

Best Regards
Pat

In Alan's answer clicking the top link should open the proper newsgroup in
OE. The second link will open it in your default browser. I've crossposted
this there.

In IE's Help | About does it say version 7.0.5730?

It would be nice to know the problems, but you should find Windows Internet
Explorer 7 in Control Panel | Add ore Remove Programs. You may have to
check "show Updates" at the top.

Hi Frank, I was trying to be brief - I guess too brief! IE 7 freezes-locks,
and I have to re-boot to get going again. Also there are pages I cannot
access - usually get to the site, but can't get to other items on that site,
i.e. "click here to see something" or "click here for _____. Never had
these problems with IE 6.

Incidentally I have Original XP with SP2 added. The IE 7 running on my
computer was added by Microsoft as an automatic update a few months ago.
This does not show on the Add or Remove list. The "show Updates" is
checked. There are 5 security updates with installation date showing, but
no application. Actually, IE 6 never showed on this list either.

The IE 7 I downloaded from Microsoft is on my desktop waiting to be
installed. File Version on one is 6.2.0029.0 (SRV03_QFE.031113-09918) In
Properties window under General Security: "This file came from another
computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer." Have any idea
what this is about? Sounds ominous to me. lol

Really appreciate your good help.
Best Regards,
Pat

I know of three causes for the vast majority of such problems:
1. Incompatible add-ons: What if you right click the IE icon on the desktop
and choose Start Without Add-ons?
Or go to Start | All Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Internet
Explorer (No Add-ons).

2. Tools | Internet Options | Advanced
Scroll to the bottom and click Reset Internet Explorer Settings.

3. Malware already installed on the computer: Help with malware

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Hi Frank,
I am giving up! I think Microsoft downloaded a freak or unusual IE 7
application on me. None of the suggestions 1,2 or 3 below worked, as they
were not where indicated. If I can find out how to delete IE7, I will go
ahead and install the new one. I do not want to install the new one over
the old since it is not the same Ver#.

Many thanks for trying to help.

Pat

Hey Frank,

Thanks for How to uninstall Internet Explorer 7
: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927177 second item in article "Method 2"
removes Explorer 7 - does not replace with IE6, which is what I started out
to accomplish.

It seems I have one of those XP's with the built in IE, and it is NOT a
separate application is why it does not show up anywhere. Wow!

After removal my OneCare offered to download IE 7, so I let it run,
this is the MSFT that I have learned to love over the years, all automatic,
no fuss no muss. We sure got bogged down there for awhile.

All is well - so again many thanks,
Regards
Pat
