IE7 Problem

B

Bill

Running Home Premium, fully patched.

This started yesterday:

IE process (according to Task Manager) does not close, although Web page has
disappeared.

Example: I thought it was a Java problem, so I went to java.com/en/download/
and clicked on the "Do I have Java?" link - the "wheel" starts turning and
IE7 "closes" - although not according to Task Manager.

I've done a System Restore and set security options to default - but the
problem persists.

Have done complete AVG scan and Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware .

As far as I can see other options are the same as those on my laptop which
has no problem.

Very strange. Any assistance appreciated.

Kill the IE process(es) in Task Manager. Then reopen IE and go to Tools >
Manage Addons > Enable/Disable Addons. Disable all of them. IE will likely
be a lot faster now. Now, enable one by one (just the ones you feel are
essential), until this starts happening again. If it is an addon that is
causing this, you should be able to pinpoint which one it is.

Another thought. You can probably run Sysinternal's Process Explorer, find
the hung iexplore.exe process and see what thread are running within it.
Check the State and see if there is anything weird going on. This will just
be a little faster and direct than going through all your addons.

There's not much you can do when IE7 goes south. That's one of
the downsides that comes with integrating applications so closely into the
operating system. Here's the complete microsoft guide to fixing IE7 on
Vista. All it really says though is if sfc/scannow doesn't help you need
to resinstall Vista.

Oh, I just realised that you are the guy that thinks that MS Word trial
version makes files disappear, when the full version does not, LOL!

Still working through yours and other suggestions without any luck so far.

Thanks for that - had run sfc /scannow without any errors showing.

A thought - If I uninstalled SP1 and re-installed it would that "repair"
IE7. Don't fancy doing a vista reinstall.

If all else fails reinstalling Win. is no big deal, as long as you have a
high speed connection. Just back up what you have on something and it's
easy. Only real hassle is re loading stuff you lost but with a high speed
connection it's fast.

Wow, that really is such a loser thing to say. I have Windows installations
running for years, never having to do anything like that. True Image
backups help, but even then, you really do not have to reinstall Windows all
the time unless you are a Malawi infected newly.. It takes a long time to
configure everything to your liking, even if you transfer registry entries
and update files.

Do you have the Google Toolbar? I had the same problem you describe, and
after a lot of trail and error, it turned out to be the culprit. Try
disabling the Google Toolbar and see if that solves the problem.

Thanks for your reply - No Google toolbar.

Getting stranger - after much trial and error (disabling Addons, etc) I now
have got rid of the multiple iexplore processes. BUT, still can't get to the
Java web site without it closing down IE when I click on "Have I got Java?".
Can live with that. Even stranger, I d/l Firefox which worked OK, but now
closes immediately. Can live with that too.

Still interested in views on whether uninstalling SP1 and reinstalling would
reapir IE.

I'm not buying into the head-butting going on here, so thanks to all for
their replies. We all need help from time to time and this is a great
resourse.

You might have someone who finished school read my post for you. I said if
all else fails. Don't know how to dumb that down so you can understand it
better. <shrug>
As for a format I always thought of myself as a real amateur at PC's, but
I guess maybe I know more than I thought then. I had to do it to this
laptop a while back, was no big deal at all even for me.

I am not sure what you are saying, but, whatever..

Is this irony? That first sentence does not make any sense, and you used a
"greengrocer's apostrophe" in your post above.

Managed to solve the problem. After trying many things I finally deleted
Java and reinstalled it. Voila!

I assume Java had been corrupted somehow, thus causing the problems I
encountered.

Thanks to those who suggested solutions. Learn something new every day.
