IE6SP1 installation problem

Bao Pu

Hello :)

I'm sure this topic has come up before, so perhaps someone can give me a
link to deal with the difficulty I have installing Microsoft Internet
Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (IE6SP1)(Windows 98, Windows Me). It downloads
fine, but will not complete self-installation.

thanks
Scott

What happens when you try to install it?

Are you upgrading to IE6 SP1 via Windows Update? To assure a clean install,
your anti-virus application should be disabled and all other running
processes closed before installing anything, including Windows Updates.

Once you have it installed, return to Windows Update for additional patches
not included with the install of IE6 SP1.

Hi PA Bear

I don't know if you will see this (since its a little far down now) but . .
..

I did what you suggested. No luck.

I chose a "minimal installation." After it finished everything it could do,
it told me "not all components were installed successfully: IE6 Web Browser,
IE Exception pack, Offline Browsing pack, Advanced Authoring, Address Book,
Outlook Express, IE readme." It told me to restart to complete installation.
Upon restart, I see that "Problem with Shortcut: The shortcut 'Resume
Windows Update Installation.Ink' refers to a location that is unavailable."

I have searched my computer for IE6SETUP.EXE to see if I could run it again,
but it isn't here.

any suggestions?

Thank
scott

Did you attempt the install via http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com?

Are you posting from the problem machine? Is the machine running Win98,
Win98SE or WinME?

In an Internet Explorer window: Help>About> what version is showing (e.g.,
6.0.1234.5678XX <—include any letters at the end)?

Copy/paste the following line into an IE Addressbar, click on GO, then
copy/paste the results into your reply:

javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion

This tells me the last time this machine was at Windows Update (if ever) was
Dec-02, or nearly two (2) years ago. Bad boy, Scott! 10 points off your
final score. <eg>

Scott's story so far: http://snipurl.com/8y1p

Third time may be the charm!...

Have you ever reinstalled, or attempted to reinstall, WinME after having
installed "vanilla" (non-SP1) IE6, which you currently have installed?
6.0.2600.00000IC

The 'IC' at the end denotes 'Internet Content Provider'. This tells me
either that you got a customized version of IE6 from your ISP or a magazine
(via CD or download) or that IE5.5, which came preinstalled on the machine,
was a version customized by the machine's manufacturer. Either may be
associated with your problem. Before exploring this, I'll need your reply
to the above two (2) questions.

-- That's odd, because that is simply not true. I just checked my Windows
Update Installation History. In 2004 I have downloaded and installed 9
updates (EXcluding EI6SP1, which I downloaded on three different occasions).
In 2003 there were over 10 updates + 3 of IE6SP1. In 2002 there were well
over 10 updates with again, 3 more IE6SP1 downloads. All of the downloads
were successful, it seems that the problem lies with the installation.

-- No. WinME was installed by the manufacturer (DELL) and has not been
re-installed for any reason. IE5.5 (or maybe just 5) was the version
pre-installed in 2001 when I got the computer. Updating to version 6 went
without problems as I recall.

From your headers:

X-Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2720.3000
X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V6.00.2600.0000

It would appear that "vanilla" IE6 installed with MS Office/Outlook (I'll
guess 2002), which *might* have been what put IC in "6.0.2600.00000IC".

If you had IE6 SP1 installed and recent updates installed, the results of
'javascript:navigator.appMinorVersion' would be something like

;SP1; Q867801 [Jul-04 IE Update]; Q823353 [Jul-04 OE Update]

Scott, this is a sticky wicket in WinME. While all Windows versions are
heavily dependent on the IE shell, WinME is even more so & quite
persnickety. Dealing with IE6 (SP1) in WinME is very complicated and I want
you to take this to the WinME newsgroup to which I'm crossposting this
reply. You'll be in very good (and more experienced, in these waters)
hands...

Hi, PA!!
Hi Scott :(

The incomplete installation problem is a relatively common one - often cured
simply........
<quote - from Zee/oops>
For the "unable to install all components" issue in WinME, try this:

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Excellent Noel!

Thank you. I did as you recommended and it worked. After restart I went back
to Windows Update and got three more available updates. Everything is up to
date now - thank you.

Thank you PA Bear also. You are both kind people.
