IE6 Won't Start At All

I have a client who was infected with a VB Script virus a while back and,
though, we cleaned that up, she still can't use Internet Explorer 6 (latest
update available). At first she'd get the Error/Send Report box, but now
nothing happens at all except that there's obviously something going on in
the background.

I say this because all her other apps slow to a crawl and, if we try to
restart, it announces that something can't stop, but doesn't identify what
that is. The only solution is to do a hard reboot.

Windows 98se has been totally reloaded on the machine, but we can't even get
to Microsoft Update, can't even ping the MS site, though other outside sides
ping OK.

Anybody have any ideas? I'm stumped.

Hi Art :)

As you don't indicate what version of Windows you have, I'll provide a bit
of general information for you. Try the following and see if it helps:

Download, install and run LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

Also, download, install and run WinsockFix Utility
http://www.dfwonline.net/files/WinsockFix.zip
or
WinsockXPFix available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
and
WinsockXP Fix- WinXP
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
Also, with instructions, at
http://www.iup.edu/house/resnet/winfix.shtm
also
From LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-
http://digital-solutions.co.uk/lavasoft/whndnfix.zip
also ....
(NOTE: It is reported that in XP SP2, the command netsh winsock reset
will fix this problem without the need for these programs.)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Jan,

I was experiencing this same issue in Win XP -- the IE 6 would start and you
could see the process running in task manager but the browser screen would
not display. Used your netsh winsock reset command suggestion which
immediately cleared my problem -- thanks

Will definitely give these a try. As noted in the closing lines of my post,
the OS is Windows 98se.

Thanks.

I tried all of these with the following results:
-- LSPFIX showed 4 DLLs in the KEEP column, none in the REMOVE column.
-- WinsockFix produced no errors
Problem remained. I removed and reinstalled TCP/IP, just to get a fresh
start (Win98se had already been reinstalled from the ground up and IE
upgraded to 6), but no change.

I can ping from DOS OK and Internet communication is apparently working
because McAfee registered OK using its own process, it's just that IE won't
start, it always triggers the Send Error dialog.

At one point I actually got a named error: Invalid page fault in module
QA0IALNB.DLL, if that's any help to anyone.

If I can't solve this, I'm just going to install Netscape for them and be
done with IE, but I REALLY don't want to do that if I can avoid it.

Thanks for all the help.
