IE6 Won't let me See Graphics

J

JCO

IE 6 running on W2K will not let me see Thumbnail Graphics that are linked
to a html file. It is my website that I've created. It shows up on my home
computer but will not display on my work computer. What would cause this to
happen?

Vincent Xu [MSFT]

Hi JCO,

Glad to see you again.

I think following steps can help us narrow down this issue:

Suggestion 1:
=============
Since this issue happens to IE, I think resetting IE setting to default may
helps.

1. Delete the cookies

1) Click Start, click Search and click For Files or Folders
2) Type "Cookies" (without the quotation marks) and click Search Now
3) Delete files in the cookie directory

2. Delete all the temporary files

1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Click Tools, click Internet Options and click Delete Files button in the
General tab

3. Delete the downloaded objects

1) Open Internet Explorer
2) Click Tools, click Internet Options and click settings button in the
General tab.
3) Press View Objects.
4) Remove all the Objects there.

4. Remove the Plug-Ins in Internet Explorer

1) Close all the Internet Explorer windows.
2) Open a Windows Explorer window by right Click My Computer and choose
Explore.
3) Locate the following folder:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\PLUGINS
4) Remove all the files in this folder.

5. Delete SoftwareDistribution folder

1) Stop Automatic Updates service.
a. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc.
b. In the right pane, stop the Automatic Updates service.
2) Delete C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.
3) Test the issue again.

6. Reset all settings of Internet Explorer

1) Under the General tab, click Clear history button.
2) Under the Security tab, click Default Level button.
3) Under the Content tab. Under Content Advisor the button default is
"Enable..."
Click on "Clear SSL" under Certificates, and click on "OK."
4) Under "Local Area Network (LAN) settings" click on the "LAN Settings..."
button - remove all checkmarks and settings unless actually required to use
a proxy and close the window
5) Under the Programs tab, click Reset Web Settings.
6) Under the Advanced tab, click Restore Defaults button.
Under Browsing put a checkmark into or remove the checkmark from "Enable
third-party browser extensions (requires restart)".
7) Click on "Apply", then "OK"
8) Close Internet Explorer and restart the computer.

7. Disable all third party Add-ons

1) Open Internet Explorer.
2) Click Tools to select Manage Add-ons.
3) Disable all third party Add-ons.

Suggestion 2:
=================
Create another new user profile to test
1. Log on as the Administrator or as a user with administrator credentials.
2. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
3. Click User Accounts.
4. Click the Advanced tab, and then click Advanced.
5. In the left pane, click the Users folder.
6. On the Action menu, click New User.
7. Enter the appropriate user information, and then click Create.
8. Logon with the new user account to see if the issue occurs in the user
profile.

Suggestion 3:
================
We may start the problematic computer in safe mode to see if this issue
occurs. The steps to boot into safe mode are as below:

Safe Mode loads a minimally protected-mode configuration, disabling Windows
device drivers and using the standard VGA display adapter.

1. Restart the computer.
2. Keep pressing F8 key until the Windows Startup menu appears.
3. Choose the Safe Mode with Network, and press Enter.

Note: Some third party applications and some hardware device cannot be used
during Safe Mode. You will temporarily be unable to connect to the Internet
temporarily while in Safe Mode.

If this issue disappears in safe mode, I suspect that it is related to some
third-party services or programs. We may use Clean Boot to eliminate third
party interference. To boot into Clean Boot environment:

1. Click Start, click Run, type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in
the Open box, and then click OK.
2. In the Startup tab, click the "Disable All" button.
3. In the Services tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" checkbox,
and then click the "Disable All" button.
4. Click OK and restart your computer.

Well I'm not sure I'm glad to be here again... but anyway...

I've tried everything you suggested. No help.
The option (Delete C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder) could not be done
becaue that folder did not exist.

I created a new user. It has the same issues.

Hi JCO,

Please try following steps:

Suggestion 1:
====================
Re-register IE related DLL files. Run following commands in command prompt

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
regsvr32 mshtml.dll
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll
regsvr32 msxml.dll
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 shell32.dll
regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll

Did you try to check the problem in Safe Mode? If not, please have a try.

Please also check following article:

How to Enable the Thumbnail View for Folders in Windows Explorer

Yes I've tried safe mode...same issue
I Registered all dll's except one listed below becasue it could not find it:
sccbase.dll

So far, nothing has worked. Can you double check the dll that I could not
find and make sure that is the correct one. I search both my computers and
could not find this file.

Thanks so far for all your help.

Hi JCO,

I checked the file again. This file appears in Windows XP but doesn't
appear in Windows 2000, sorry for that.

This is a quick note to let you know that I am researching your issue and
will get back to you as soon as possible. I appreciate your patience.

....
It would probably help if you posted a link to a page
and a specific image file which demonstrated the symptom.
E.g. it may be something specific such as a problem with
..png files (in which case you would try re-registering pngfilt.dll), etc.

What level of maintenance do you have on your OS
and how do you visit Windows Update?
FYI this means that you do not use WUv5, WUv6 or MU

At one point I thought that older OS such as yours
only used WUv4 but lately it has appeared that somehow
they can be upgraded to use higher versions
(perhaps as a result of new service packs?
I don't have your OS and so far nobody in the WU NG
has bothered clarifying this detail.)

Yes I've tried safe mode...same issue

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?dlltype=file&l=55&alpha=sccbase*&S=1

Looks like it only is available in NT5.1 (e.g. XP) and higher.

BTW do you get thumbnails in Windows Explorer? (E.g. View, Thumbnails)

In any case, it looks as if that OS (at least with SP4) is supposed
to have a thumbvw.dll and it is supposed to registerable.

http://support.microsoft.com/dllhelp/?fid=204509&l=55&det=1

(Details for File + Product search for: thumb* with W2Ksp4)

Try that one instead? (I don't know if Explorer "thumbnails"
are rendered the same way that small images are but
if you're getting stuck I think it won't hurt to try this in case
there are some common routines used by both.)

Similarly it might be relevant to know if you are having
any problems with rendering Favicons for IE.
E.g. do you see Google's G or MSN's Butterfly
when you go to those sites?

BTW if you don't have the latest maintenance
it would be a good idea to visit Windows Update
and get current.

1. These are jpg files at website: http://dfwtejanos.com
Specifically, this jpg,
(http://dfwtejanos.com/home/060412_MartinHighSchoolPlayer/MartinHighSchoolPl

Players.
There is also a graphic (jpg) that says Read More (with a red plus sign).

Can you explain this please?

<extract>
<!-- jco; Pre-Load spinning gif image first to avoid lockups
<script>var imgSpin = new Image(); imgSpin.src = "files/emaila9.gif"</script>
-->
</extract>

Also please explain when and where I might see it.
E.g. does it only appear if I do something in the page?

What's really surprising is finding out when it finishes loading
(e.g. as seen with FiddlerTool.)

I think that there is a documented issue about loading images
in a script and why Red-X may result but I can't remember
exactly where I read it--probably in an MSDN article several
years ago. The same article would have given a workaround
for the problem.

Here's the sort of thing I was thinking of (but more likely via the MSDN
links in it at the bottom, assuming the document still exists):

<title>KB269802 - BUG: Internet Explorer Stops Responding When You Download Images</title>

(TechNet search for
load* image* script* timeout*
)

You would probably get a more informed answer in a newsgroup
which specializes in web development. I'll cross-post to one now
in case someone there wants to comment now.

2. I'm not sure about the level of Maintenance. When I do an update, I
believe it is V6 but if you can tell me how to verify this... I will.

I think you should be able to see your Service Pack level
with System Properties, e.g. press Win-Break

You could tell the level of WU you are using from the URL in the
IE Address bar (after all the redirections).

If WU is really V6 then you should look harder for the SoftwareDistribution
directory that Vincent wanted you to find. E.g. perhaps it is a system or
hidden folder and would be suppressed by whatever tool you were using
to check for it.

One way would be to open a cmd window and enter:

dir/ad %windir%\SoftwareDistribution

E.g. using the shell variable would avoid the possibility that
you have your System installed under %SystemDrive%:\WINNT
instead of C:\Windows as Vincent was assuming.

The spinning image is not required anymore. I should have removed it... and
will.

The work around is that I can change the path from Relative to Absolute (by
adding http://dfwtejanos.com/ to each photo's current path on the server (as
I gave you in the earlier email). Then I can see it with my browser. But
this is silly. I have so many jpg that are thumbnails which point to a
picture gallery. I can't change all of these.

Also; With Frontpage, I can do a preview which everything appears perfect.
Once I send it to the server, then I can no longer see these jpg (only the
ones that have a hyperlink to them). Again, this only happens on my work
computer (which is in the same room as my home computer). My home computer,
like yours, will see everything perfect.

So bottom line is that my IE Explorer is corrupted somehow & there does not
seem to be a way to fix it.
Any attempts to go back to an older version, then re-install back to v6
fails to fix the problem too.

Any other suggestions...other than reloading the OS from scratch.

V

Vincent Xu [MSFT]

Hi JCO,

Let's try to re-install IE6(If possible)

Method 1:
================
if you don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run then
enter "rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance" without the quotes, exactly as
shown (it's case sensitive), and select the appropriate entry.

More detailed info is available here: Description of the Internet Explorer
Repair Tool
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q194177
(Also apply to IE6)

Method 2:
===============
1) Insert the Windows installation CD in your CD-ROM drive.

2) Click Start, and click Run.

3) Copy the command prompt below in the Open box (exactly as show - it's
case sensitive), and click OK. (Assumes %System% is installed in Windows
on your C:\ partition. Change as appropriate for your particular
situation.) Rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

4) It will display a "File Needed" screen, click "Browse.." and browse to
<CD-ROM drive>\i386, (where <CD-ROM drive> is the drive letter of the
CD-ROM, For example, D:).

5) Click Open, click Ok, it should begin reinstalling Internet Explorer.

(NOTE: It has been reported, courtesy of Steve Wechsler, that if you're on
Windows XP Pro SP2, it may prompt you for some files that it cannot find in
the WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder, which you'll then need to
browse to. It's thought that this may apply to XP Home also. The specific
files are iexplore.exe which actually IS in the i386 folder,
mswrd632.wpc, which is located in the Program Files\Common
Files\Microsoft Shared\TextConv folder, AND, INSTALL.IN_ , which will
be located on a slipstreamed XP Pro CD in the i386 folder and also located
in the i386 folder on an XP Pro SP1 disk. So, copying the 2 files above to
the WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder should allow you to be able to
repair/reinstall IE on an SP2 system by right clicking ie.inf in the
WINDOWS\inf folder and selecting Install or using the rundll32.exe line
given above.)

Method 3:
==============
Check following link:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm

Hope this helps.
