IE6 SP1 Not Broken

On my laptop, most web sites won't open from IE ('javascript:flGotVals({})'
shows up in the path). When I go to About to check the version, it doesn't
say IE6Sp1 (version is empty, and says 'Based on NCSA Mosaic'). ..I get an
unspecified error (96). I've re-installed XP SP2. I've tried to re-apply
IE6Sp1, but it says it's already there. I've tried to remove and add IE from
the Add/Remove Windows components, but no help. I can't do a Windows Repair
from the XP disk, because none was supplied with the purchase of my laptop
(HP Pavilion ze5400). Any ideas?? Thx.

Hi John :)

If you have XP, you can disable IE, but, unlike previous versions of IE, you
cannot uninstall it, as it is a core part of the Windows XP operating
system.

If you don't have the CD, check and see if you have a Restore point to a
date prior to the time you tried to uninstall or remove IE. If so, then run
the System Restore and see if that will either resolve the problem, or get
you back to your original problem and then we can help you from there. But,
by trying to remove IE, you have likely caused considerable damage to your
Xp system.

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start>Run and type cmd to get the command
prompt, then type in "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes, and notice the
space between the c and the /.)

Have your XP CD handy and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it
takes a while. This will do the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP and a
lot more, that is find any corrupt system files and replace them. It
does not, however, re-register the various software components (except
possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

If you bought the laptop new I would call the company that you bought it
from and tell them to send you a CD ASAP. If you bought the laptop used
from another party, then you may have a problem. You should have the
Product number and may need to call Microsoft to find out if you can get a
CD from them. I don't know how they work these things with after use ware.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I do not have a restore point. As far as trying to
uninstall, I only unchecked Internet Explorer in the Windows Components of
the Add\Remove Porgrams (I can't imagine MS would allow this, if it created
problems with XP).

The sfc command yeilded now improvement. This is my laptop, but I'm not sure
why I should request the XP CD...to allow the chance to run a repair?

It's a strange problem. Some sites, it won't open. Others open fine...but
for hotmail...I can't type in the login area...and I can get into Yahoo, but
can't type into the login area. The biggest issue is that my Turbo Tax fails
to install the State version, since it's failing to launch IE. And the fact
that the version does not show is bizarre. Any further ideas would be greatly
appreciated. I scanned the hard-drive for errors, scan regularly with
Antivirus and Spyware. It's hard to believe this is so difficult to repair.
Thx. for the help.

No...as I said, you can disable it by unchecking it where you did, but, you
cannot uninstall it. And deleting any IE files would cause damage to your
system. When you stated that you had tried to remove and re-add IE, it
sounded as if you had tried to uninstall it. If that is not the case then I
misunderstood your statement.

Yes. New computers normally come with at least a Recovery CD, and perhaps
yours did as well, which you may be able to use to recover your system if
necessary, if it did not come with the OS CD.

If you have any 3rd party toolbars, such as Google or Yahoo toolbar disable
them. If you have Yahoo Companion, it is know to cause some problem and you
should uninstall it for now. Reset your Internet Security to Medium.
Disable your AV and Firewall and see if that helps.

That looks as if you have some kind of third-party interference on board.
Post an example link. You do a view source of it (to verify that you are
seeing that script reference in it) and then if the link is public others can
try the same. My guess is that they probably won't see that same reference.
E.g. I suspect it could be something that some other app on your machine
(or in your proxy) has inserted into the HTML source. Etc.

When I go to About to check the version, it doesn't say IE6Sp1
(version is empty, and says 'Based on NCSA Mosaic').
..I get an unspecified error (96).

Perhaps something has changed the version info or User-Agent.

See what you get from this diagnostic site:

http://www.fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx

Notice the link at the bottom which could be used to download
a .reg file to ensure the browser appears to be IE6.

I've re-installed XP SP2. I've tried to re-apply IE6Sp1,
but it says it's already there. I've tried to remove and add IE from
the Add/Remove Windows components, but no help.

With XPsp2 Internet browsing is integrated into the OS.
IE6sp2 is just a way of referring to that functionality.
There is no longer a separate product installed
and it supersedes IE6sp1.

I can't do a Windows Repair
from the XP disk, because none was supplied with the purchase of my laptop
(HP Pavilion ze5400). Any ideas?? Thx.

Let's find out what is broken before deciding on a repair.
