IE6 Slow Down

For the past week, my IE6 has slowed down to the point where it would take
several minutes for a page to load. After reinstalling, it would speed up.
The next morning, it would be slow again. I got the brainstorm of removing
IE6 from my pc in hopes that a "clean" install would do the trick. That was
a BIG mistake. I was no longer able to view the contents of folders, nor was
I able to go online (no browser). I was able to reinstall IE6, only because
I had copied ie6setup.exe to a floppy. The browser is still very slow. Can
anybody suggest a remedy for this problem? Thank you.

Thank you, Don, for your suggestions. I did the cleanups you mentioned, but
there were no beasties found on my pc. From the looks of things, others are
having this same problem. The only thing that I have not tried is to try to
reinstall ie6setup.exe in safe mode. I will keep you informed of any
progress. Thank you again.

Don, I reinstalled ie6setup.exe in safe mode, but that didn't help. I even
reinstalled my OS (ME) with the same result. Even though I am using a DSL as
my ISP, my browser takes several minutes to load each webpage. I am as
baffled as when I started. Have you anymore suggestions?

Hi,
See http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq#13 first 2 items. But, if IE was fast
at one time and became slow, I would still be looking at another program
(possibly malware) as the cause.

You did clear the Temporary Internet Files, right? A full TIF can slow
things down.

Or...
A legitimate program running in the background may be causing this. Disable
(for diagnostic purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers, toolbars,
security, anti-virus, etc. Take a look at any program that might be
interacting with IE. You may have to reinstall, or not reinstall, a program.

Go back to http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Work through the preliminary
steps and post a HijackThis log to the forum at

It's strange, Don, but I did clear out my TIF, ran several scans with Spybot
S&D, Adaware, NIS's antivirus program and any other scan I could find.
Nothing was found that didn't get immediately removed. The strange part
comes in when I noticed that all other programs have not been affected. I am
now using Firefox for a browser and it works just fine. I have given up and
am going to upgrade my OS to XP. I am currently using ME with a DSL for an
ISP. Slow is unacceptable.

Thank you anyway for all your suggestions, but after reviewing all relevent
posts on this subject, I am concluding that NOBODY really knows the cause of
the slowdown. I find it hard to believe that Microsoft has no remedies for
the problem short of buying a new OS. (Thanks fellas.) I'm bailing.

Thank you again, Don.
