IE6 showing blank pages

E

Ed VanDyke

For approximately 2-3 wks my IE6 has been showing blank pages on many sites.
Those I first noticed were the WinUpdate page, Hotmail and Yahoo mail. As
time goes on I find many more examples. It seems to be any page with
"interactive" content (i.e.. http://www.starwars.com/,
http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/) That being said, google and other search
engines still work fine. Early on, when I thought it was just a WinUpdate
problem, I tried several fixes, such as adding appropriate site preferences.
This was to no avail. I then downloaded a copy of Netscape (Many years ago
I was a very loyal follower) I had the same response to each page, until I
switched to the Netscape renderer, at which point everything was fine.
WinUpdate, obviously, still didn't work, nor did Hotmail. All other pages
are fully functional. That's most of what I know so far. It may be worth
mentioning the Windows Media player gives me an "internal error" every time
I try to start it, despite a re-install. Also Norton Anti-virus won't
perform a system scan. It just freezes. I have no reason to believe these
are connected except that they happened about the same time. Do I have
something malicious in my system, or just some random and inconvenient data
glitch. Just for kicks here's a HijackThis log. Thank you to everyone for
your interest.

Blank - Empty - White Pages

IE6 opens blank/empty/seethrough windows or have to refresh to see contents
Blank Pages:

also…..

Go to Start>Run> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem. If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll?
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll?
regsvr32 msxml.dll?
regsvr32 mshtml.dll?
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll?
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll?

If that doesn't work, then check out the following article and do the
additional steps outlined
there:

You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You
Click a Link

also……

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Try disabling *all* other programs, including virus scanners, to see if
there is an improvement. If not, proceed as follows:

You may have a broken entry in file associations:

Go to my computer, view/folder options/file types (or control panel, folder
options depending on your operating system).

Scroll down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols, click edit twice and
make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome

The same applies for URL:Gopher

DDE should be set to: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL

Note: If the IE repair tool is available to you (control panel, add/remove
programs, highlight IE, select add/remove) - running a repair will often fix
the above associations automatically.

Well, I think we're onto something. The last one, msjava.dll, could not be
found. I'm going to work on that for a while now.
Always happy for more input. thank you. =)

Hi Ed :)

First, you need to post your HJT log at one of the forums and let the
experts there evaluate it for you.

IWhile waiting for a reply, check the information below and see if it will
help:

Blank - Empty - White Pages

IE6 opens blank/empty/seethrough windows or have to refresh to see
contents
Blank Pages:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers2.htm#blank_windows

also…..

Go to Start>Run> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem.
If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll?
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll?
regsvr32 msxml.dll?
regsvr32 mshtml.dll?
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll?
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll?

If that doesn't work, then check out the following article and do the
additional steps outlined
there:

You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You
Click a Link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q281679

also……

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following
message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for
WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which
is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has
been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Try disabling *all* other programs, including virus scanners, to see if
there is an improvement. If not, proceed as follows:

You may have a broken entry in file associations:

Go to my computer, view/folder options/file types (or control panel,
folder
options depending on your operating system).

Scroll down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols, click edit twice and
make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome

The same applies for URL:Gopher

DDE should be set to: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL

Note: If the IE repair tool is available to you (control panel, add/remove
programs, highlight IE, select add/remove) - running a repair will often
fix
the above associations automatically.

How to make a good newsgroup post:
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

For approximately 2-3 wks my IE6 has been showing blank pages on many
sites. Those I first noticed were the WinUpdate page, Hotmail and Yahoo
mail. As time goes on I find many more examples. It seems to be any
page with "interactive" content (i.e.. http://www.starwars.com/,
http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/) That being said, google and other
search engines still work fine. Early on, when I thought it was just a
WinUpdate problem, I tried several fixes, such as adding appropriate site
preferences. This was to no avail. I then downloaded a copy of Netscape
(Many years ago I was a very loyal follower) I had the same response to
each page, until I switched to the Netscape renderer, at which point
everything was fine. WinUpdate, obviously, still didn't work, nor did
Hotmail. All other pages are fully functional. That's most of what I
know so far. It may be worth mentioning the Windows Media player gives
me an "internal error" every time I try to start it, despite a
re-install. Also Norton Anti-virus won't perform a system scan. It just
freezes. I have no reason to believe these are connected except that
they happened about the same time. Do I have something malicious in my
system, or just some random and inconvenient data glitch. Just for kicks
here's a HijackThis log. Thank you to everyone for your interest.

Hi Ed :)

Check the information here:

msjava.dll - The specified module could not be found
Likely you don't have MS Java installed:

Try installing the Sun Java and see if it helps:

Download the J2SE JRE here: It will work as well

Well, I think we're onto something. The last one, msjava.dll, could not
be found. I'm going to work on that for a while now.
Always happy for more input. thank you. =)

Blank - Empty - White Pages

IE6 opens blank/empty/seethrough windows or have to refresh to see
contents
Blank Pages:
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers2.htm#blank_windows

Go to Start>Run> and register the following dll's by using
regsvr32 command. Try the first 2, then see if it resolves the problem.
If
not then register the rest of the .dll's:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll?
regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 scrrun.dll?
regsvr32 msxml.dll?
regsvr32 mshtml.dll?
regsvr32 shdocvw.dll?
regsvr32 browseui.dll
regsvr32 msjava.dll?

If that doesn't work, then check out the following article and do the
additional steps outlined
there:

You Cannot Open New Internet Explorer Window or Nothing Happens After You
Click a Link
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q281679

also……

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following
message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If that doesn't fix it, see this article:

http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#new_window

5. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for
WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which
is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System
(C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has
been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Try disabling *all* other programs, including virus scanners, to see if
there is an improvement. If not, proceed as follows:

You may have a broken entry in file associations:

Go to my computer, view/folder options/file types (or control panel,
folder
options depending on your operating system).

Scroll down to the URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocols, click edit twice and
make sure the following is in the application used to perform action box:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome

The same applies for URL:Gopher

DDE should be set to: "%1",,-1,0,,,,
Application should say: IExplore
DDE application not running should be blank
Topic should be: WWW_OpenURL

Note: If the IE repair tool is available to you (control panel,
add/remove
programs, highlight IE, select add/remove) - running a repair will often
fix
the above associations automatically.

How to make a good newsgroup post:
http://www.dts-l.org/goodpost.htm

For approximately 2-3 wks my IE6 has been showing blank pages on many
sites. Those I first noticed were the WinUpdate page, Hotmail and Yahoo
mail. As time goes on I find many more examples. It seems to be any
page with "interactive" content (i.e.. http://www.starwars.com/,
http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/) That being said, google and other
search engines still work fine. Early on, when I thought it was just a
WinUpdate problem, I tried several fixes, such as adding appropriate
site preferences. This was to no avail. I then downloaded a copy of
Netscape (Many years ago I was a very loyal follower) I had the same
response to each page, until I switched to the Netscape renderer, at
which point everything was fine. WinUpdate, obviously, still didn't
work, nor did Hotmail. All other pages are fully functional. That's
most of what I know so far. It may be worth mentioning the Windows
Media player gives me an "internal error" every time I try to start it,
despite a re-install. Also Norton Anti-virus won't perform a system
scan. It just freezes. I have no reason to believe these are connected
except that they happened about the same time. Do I have something
malicious in my system, or just some random and inconvenient data
glitch. Just for kicks here's a HijackThis log. Thank you to everyone
for your interest.
