IE uses 50% of CPU - I even tried reformatting

Internet explorer froze while on the Internet about a month ago. I was unable
to exit IE. I checked the task manager and iexplore.exe was using 50% of the
total CPU. I have two processors listed in the task manager so, iexplore.exe
uses one processor completely. I could not restart the computer from the
start menu. Ultimately, I had to hold down the power button. After powering
up I scanned the computer with Trend Micro’s anti-virus and nothing was
found. I also scannned with the lasted versions of Spybot SD and Ad-aware.
That also did not work. About an hour later it occurred again. I downloaded
Trend Micro’s HouseCall and it did not find anything either. I had IE6 so, I
thought upgrading to IE7 would fix the problem. Unfortunately, it did not
and after a couple of days it crashed again. I stopped using IE7 and starting
using Mozilla firefox and still iexplore.exe process would begin to hog 50%
of my CPU’s cycles. At this point I gave up and decided to reformat the
computer. You would think that this would do the trick. Just my luck it
crashed yet again after a couple of days.

Windows XP Pro - all update patches installed.

Hi Pascal,

First up, try running IE without any Addons
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Internet Explorer (noAddons). If
the problem disappears then you will know it is an addon toolbar/BHO,
although all of your addons listed do not look suspicious.

Maybe....

Is your computer from HP? If so check with hp.com for any driver updates for
your machine.

How did I know?

DriveLetterAccess - {5CA3D70E-1895-11CF-8E15-001234567890} -
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dla\tfswshx.dll
Is from HP...

You will find the IE7 release notes at
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d...-us/IETechCol/cols/dnexpie/ie7_css_compat.asp

which lists some of the known driver and addons that have caused problems
with IE7.

Regards.

Rob,

I have an IBM and on their website they have a nifty utility which is
similar to windows update except it is for device driver updates. I updated
the machine yesterday and will try that first. I hope that is the problem
and not IE add-ons. It would take a while to search for the add-on culprit.
I wasted enough time on the problem. I thank you for your assistance. I
will post next Thursday if there is no problem. It usually takes 2 days for
the problem to show again.

Thanks again,
Pascal

Rob,

It happened again. I was on yahoo.com when IE7 froze. The status bar on IE
displayed it was trying to download from ad.doubleclick. This does not mean
definitively that it is double click because I was on the site for a while
before this occurred. The task manager showed that iexplore.exe was using 50%
of the CPU.

I went to the start menu and clicked to restart the machine then a dialog
box said MCI Command handling Windows was not responding, end now.
Everything disappeared and only the wallpaper was seen not even the taskbar
was showing. I was able to move the mouse around without any problems or
delays. Waited around a 2 minutes and the system finely shutdown and began
the restart process.

After I restarted the machine, I deleted Internet History, cookies,
temporary Internet files, windows temp folder, prefetch, Java cache, and
recycle bin. Then I opened IE7 and typed in the google toolbar and hit the
enter key and IE7 froze. I waited about 1 minute and hit the “X†to close
IE7 then hit the End Now and Don’t Send dialog boxes. Opened the task
manager and saw iexplore.exe was using 50% of the CPU again (Data: 27 MB
memory usage, 416 Handles, 1 thread). I tried to end task from the task
manager with no success.

I tried to view IE7 help from the drop down help menu and that also froze
so, I tried to close everything. I received the End Now dialog boxes for:
rundll32.exe
MCI Command handle window
ctfmon (Alternative User Input Text Input Processor)

Then I went to the start menu and click restart. After about 1 minute I
received “Please wait… Closing Network Connections†message which stayed for
5 minutes then I held down the power button to force shutdown.

At this point I will only use IE7 without any add-ons for about a week and
if there is not any problems I will check one by one the add ons.

This is a nightmare.
Thank you again for you help.
